Palo Alto-based educational technology startup ScrollEd has built a platform designed to transform textbooks and PDFs into interactive vertical feeds, offering a study format modeled on short-form social media, according to a report by TechCrunch AI (https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/20/scrolled-wants-to-turn-textbooks-into-tiktok/). The company is participating in the Startup Battlefield 200 competition at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference.

Bootstrapped earlier this year, ScrollEd was co-founded by husband-and-wife team Utsav Gupta and Rebecca Neff after both grew frustrated with late-night social media browsing. Gupta studies artificial intelligence and human purpose at Stanford University, while Neff studies computer science at the University of Pennsylvania. Together, they designed the platform to adapt academic material to the media habits of younger users.

ScrollEd's app converts text files into feeds structured like TikTok or Instagram Reels, rendering content as AI-generated video, audio, text, and interactive quizzes. Users swipe vertically to move between topics, while swiping horizontally allows them to explore a topic in greater depth before completing an assessment quiz.

Gupta told TechCrunch AI that younger demographics, particularly 18-year-olds, increasingly consume vertical, short-form media exclusively, which creates friction for material that demands depth. He noted that the company aims to meet students where they are without engineering the platform for maximum screen-time engagement, allowing users to move deeper into a subject as easily as advancing to the next clip.

The startup is targeting individual learners, educational institutions, and corporate training programs. ScrollEd operates on a freemium model combining a free consumer tier with a paid ScrollEd Pro subscription, alongside annual institutional licenses that provide educators with analytics on student engagement, completion rates, and lesson progress.

ScrollEd plans to launch its consumer offering during TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco, scheduled for October 13–15, 2026. In the coming months, the company plans to build out its lesson catalog, develop source-checking workflows, run institutional pilots, and create adaptive learning infrastructure that allows educators to tailor materials to individual student progress.
