Heart Aerospace Completes First Flight of X1 Electric Demonstrator as Operations Move to US
The Swedish-founded startup demonstrated its 11-tonne test aircraft in New York as it advances toward a 2031 entry into service for its 30-seat hybrid airliner.

Heart Aerospace has completed the first test flight of its X1 demonstrator at Plattsburgh International Airport in New York, reaching an altitude of 335 meters while generating more than one megawatt of electric power during the 27-minute flight on August 12. The trial included taxiing, takeoff, climbing, maneuvering, and landing. With a 32-meter wingspan, a length of 23 meters, and a takeoff weight exceeding 11,300 kilograms, the X1 is currently the largest all-electric aircraft to take to the air.
The electricity consumed during the demonstration flight cost approximately $5, as first reported by The Next Web citing details from Engadget. Heart contrasted that figure with traditional jet fuel prices, which averaged $3.50 per gallon during the week ending August 7—up 63 percent year-over-year. While the low energy cost illustrates the potential fuel savings on short-haul regional routes where power costs remain far more predictable than volatile oil markets, it covers only direct energy consumption. Overall regional airline economics remain heavily bound to maintenance expenses, crew costs, airport fees, capital expenditure, and periodic battery replacements.
The X1 is strictly an experimental testbed for Heart's planned commercial airframe, the ES-30. Designed as a 30-seat regional airliner, the ES-30 will rely on a hybrid-electric architecture rather than purely electric power, pairing an onboard battery system with a conventional combustion range extender. Because of current limitations in battery energy density, the airframe is designed to achieve roughly 200 kilometers of range on battery power alone, expanding to approximately 800 kilometers when the range extender is active.
Heart is currently building the initial pre-production ES-30 at its pilot manufacturing facility in Los Angeles. The company plans to start flight testing in 2028 under Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Part 25 certification standards, targeting commercial entry into service in 2031. Heart projects that the ES-30 will reduce overall operating expenses by more than 40 percent relative to legacy regional aircraft, driven by cheaper energy, simplified propulsion maintenance, and software-driven operational uptime. The company plans to launch commercial flights with a single pilot before eventually transitioning the platform toward fully autonomous operations.
To date, Heart has gathered $9.4 billion in customer commitments, which consist of non-binding options, letters of intent, and conditional purchase agreements. Major backers include United Airlines, Air Canada, and regional carrier JSX. United Airlines Chief Financial Officer Michael Leskinen highlighted the potential of electric aircraft to elevate the passenger experience, while Air Canada Chief Financial Officer John Di Bert noted that decarbonizing aviation requires combining operational efficiencies, sustainable aviation fuels, and new airframe technologies. Chief Technology Officer Ben Stabler stated that the flight demonstrated Heart's capability to design, construct, test, and operate a clean-sheet electric commercial airframe.
The flight highlights a broader structural move for the company. Originally established in Gothenburg, Sweden, Heart announced in April 2025 that it was closing its Swedish operations and shifting its headquarters entirely to Los Angeles. Chief Executive Anders Forslund stated at the time that relocating to California would support experimental flights for the X1 and planned X2 demonstrators, accelerate vertical integration across software and battery systems, and bring the firm closer to its primarily North American capital partners and airline customers. The X1 flight was conducted under an FAA Special Airworthiness Certificate in the Experimental Category.
Heart's test flight comes amid broader industry efforts to decarbonize regional transport across a range of alternative technologies. Competitors including Beta Technologies, Archer Aviation, Boom Supersonic, ZeroAvia, Harbour Air, Destinus, and XPeng are pursuing diverse models ranging from electric vertical takeoff and landing craft to hydrogen propulsion and supersonic speed. Rather than targeting urban air mobility, Heart is focusing on traditional regional routes currently operated by aircraft like the Embraer ERJ series. Fulfilling its 2031 commercial roadmap will depend on sustained improvements in battery cell density and converting conditional airline commitments into binding purchase orders.
