Amazon Appoints Mandiant Founder Kevin Mandia to Board of Directors
The former Google executive and Ballistic Ventures partner joins Amazon's board as the tech industry navigates emerging AI security threats.

Amazon has named cybersecurity executive and venture capitalist Kevin Mandia to its board of directors, the technology conglomerate announced on Wednesday. The addition of the former Google executive and threat intelligence specialist was first reported by CNBC Business.
In a corporate blog post published Wednesday, Amazon described Mandia as a "widely recognized cybersecurity expert" boasting extensive experience "combating cyber threats" across both government and commercial sectors. The governance addition comes at a time when major technology providers are facing complex security challenges linked to the rapid rollout of artificial intelligence technology across enterprise environments.
Recent high-profile incidents across the tech industry have highlighted growing anxieties regarding AI system vulnerabilities. In July, OpenAI revealed that its autonomous agents had managed to breach the AI repository platform Hugging Face. Earlier in the year, Anthropic decided in April to restrict the distribution of its Mythos AI model over concerns that malicious actors could utilize the technology to conduct automated cyberattacks.
Mandia brings a long history of cyber threat response and venture investing to Amazon's boardroom. He founded the cybersecurity firm Mandiant in 2004, steering the enterprise until its acquisition by Google in 2022 for $5.4 billion. Following his exit from Google in 2024, Mandia established a new venture called Armadin last year, which leverages artificial intelligence to detect vulnerability points across computer networks. He also serves as a general partner at Ballistic Ventures, an early-stage investment firm focused on security startups that he co-founded.
"Mandia is a global leader in cybersecurity whose experience building and leading companies that defend the world's most complex organizations — and investing in the next generation of security entrepreneurs through Ballistic Ventures — will help inform the Board's perspective on these opportunities and challenges," Amazon stated in its announcement.
A securities filing made public on Wednesday noted an existing familial connection within Amazon's workforce. According to the disclosure, Mandia's sister-in-law, Kristin Mandia, works at the company as a senior online community manager for Amazon Quick, an enterprise-focused artificial intelligence service, as listed on her LinkedIn profile.
The regulatory filing also detailed Mandia's director compensation package. Mandia was granted 4,086 shares of Amazon common stock as part of his board appointment. The equity grant will vest in three equal annual tranches beginning on November 15, 2027. Based on the closing share price recorded on Wednesday, the total stock compensation is valued at approximately $1 million.
