Discord Resumes Age Verification Rollout With Activity-Based Estimation

Discord has resumed the rollout of its age verification checks, introducing an estimation system based on account behavior and history after pausing an earlier attempt earlier this year, according to reporting by Mashable Tech (https://mashable.com/tech/discord-age-checks-based-on-activity-and-more).

The messaging platform had initially announced plans to introduce age verification in early February to safeguard teenage users, but suspended the initiative by the end of that month following pushback from users over privacy and security risks tied to government ID uploads and facial age estimation.

Under the resumed rollout, Discord uses an automated model that estimates a user's age group based on several account factors. These include general activity levels, the servers and communities a user joins, connected third-party game accounts, and account tenure. Discord stated that no direct messages, calls, or other user content are analyzed to determine an account's age.

Discord estimates that 90 percent of users will not need to make changes or submit documentation under the new system. Users can inspect their assigned age bracket under User Settings in the Account Status menu.

For accounts prompted to verify, Discord has added alternative options that bypass facial estimation and identity card uploads. These include credit card authorization, age-range confirmation shared via Apple's App Store or Google Play, Google Wallet confirmation, and AgeKey credentials.

Adult accounts will experience no functional changes on the platform. Teenage users will retain access to core features including messaging friends, joining voice calls, and participating in non-restricted servers. However, age-restricted channels and spaces will be blocked, and Discord has implemented additional safety protections when non-friends attempt to message teenage accounts.

Discord has already deployed the age verification system in regions where mandated by local law, such as Texas, and indicated the broader rollout is designed to comply with emerging age verification regulations globally.
