John Ternus Teases Upcoming Hardware Event in First Memo as Apple Chief Executive

John Ternus has formally assumed the role of chief executive officer at Apple, succeeding Tim Cook after his 15-year tenure at the head of the consumer technology giant. The executive transition places the former head of hardware engineering in charge during a pivotal operational window for the Cupertino, California-based company.

Ternus takes control just days before Apple's scheduled September 9 autumn media event. The annual gathering is anticipated to be a landmark occasion for the business as it seeks to refresh its primary product lines and bolster its competitive positioning across emerging technology sectors.

Industry expectations for the upcoming presentation include the potential unveiling of Apple's first foldable smartphone. The company is also projected to broaden access to its revamped Siri assistant, marking a key push to position its flagship artificial intelligence capabilities against established market alternatives like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude.

In a staff memo distributed on Tuesday—details of which were first reported by Bloomberg and noted by TechCrunch—Ternus addressed the organization for the first time in his new executive role, pointing to immediate product milestones and long-term development efforts.

“We have a huge launch next week that’s going to be phenomenal,” Ternus wrote in the internal communication. “I’m just as excited about what lies beyond that, including the incredible products already in the works and the ones we haven’t even imagined yet that we’ll dream up and create together.”

Beyond next week's expected devices, Apple is reportedly advancing several unannounced consumer hardware projects. Among the devices under development are AirPods equipped with embedded cameras, augmented reality smart glasses, and a touchscreen-capable laptop.

Cook offered a vote of confidence for his successor in a message sent to employees on his final day serving as chief executive, praising Ternus's track record in product design and execution.
