Micron Demonstrates 512GB DDR5 Server Module as AI Drives Memory Density Demands
The chipmaker demonstrated a high-density DRAM module running up to 9,200 MT/s, targeting volume production in late 2027.

Micron Technology announced on Sept. 15 that it has successfully demonstrated a 512-gigabyte DDR5 RDIMM memory module for enterprise servers, according to a report by Yahoo Finance (https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/articles/micron-mu-unveils-breakthrough-memory-171152232.html). The company described the high-density component as the first of its kind globally.
The memory module operates at data transfer speeds reaching up to 9,200 mega-transfers per second (MT/s). Deployed in a standard 24-slot dual-socket server architecture, the component enables system memory configurations of up to 12 terabytes of DDR5 DRAM in a single server unit.
Micron stated that the 512GB DDR5 module consumes 16 watts of power. That marks a reduction of more than 60 percent compared with the 44.2 watts drawn by four separate 128GB modules delivering equivalent capacity. In select data analytics workloads, the module provides up to 1.4 times higher performance compared with 256GB DDR5 memory setups.
Processor manufacturers AMD and Intel are currently validating the module technology for integration into next-generation server architectures. However, volume manufacturing is not scheduled to begin until the second half of 2027, limiting its immediate contribution to Micron's near-term revenue.
The demonstration highlights shifting architectural requirements as artificial intelligence and complex database workloads push data centers toward higher memory densities per socket. To secure future capacity, Micron reported in June that 16 strategic customer agreements spanning data center, automotive, and consumer segments are expected to deliver $22 billion in cash deposits and related financial commitments. Those contracts include pricing floors and take-or-pay terms, alongside $100 billion in remaining performance obligations.
Micron indicated that tight supply conditions across the broader memory sector are projected to persist beyond 2027. While current market constraints support pricing strength, the company's long-term operating margins will hinge on preserving pricing power as industry-wide fabrication capacity catches up to demand.
Institutional investor positioning shifted favorably in recent quarters. Second-quarter filings showed 184 hedge funds holding positions in Micron, up from 154 in the first quarter and 137 in the fourth quarter. Among major holders, Situational Awareness LP increased its stake by 27,713 percent to over 4.8 million shares, and Coatue Management increased its holdings by 1,794 percent to approximately 3.1 million shares, while AQR Capital Management trimmed its position by 16 percent to roughly 3.8 million shares. As of Aug. 31, short interest stood at 29.7 million shares—representing 2.64 percent of the public float, down 1.04 percent from the previous reporting period—with 1.2 days to cover.
