RustDesk Adds Unattended Remote Desktop Access for Linux Wayland Environments
The open-source remote access platform introduces multi-monitor support and post-reboot login access in a preview build for Debian and Ubuntu systems.

Open-source remote desktop software provider RustDesk has launched a preview build featuring true unattended remote access on the Wayland display server protocol, addressing a long-standing technical hurdle for Linux desktop administration. As first reported by Hacker News, the update enables users to remotely connect to target machines without requiring manual session confirmation on the host system.
The feature release includes support for multi-monitor desktop configurations, allowing system administrators and remote workers to manage multi-display setups seamlessly over Wayland. Historically, achieving remote desktop capabilities under Wayland has presented significant technical complexity compared to legacy display servers, limiting full-featured unattended remote access options across the broader Linux ecosystem.
With the new implementation, an initial configuration on the target system allows operators to initiate remote connections even when the host machine is entirely unattended. The functionality extends to post-reboot scenarios, enabling remote access directly from the system login screen without human intervention at the physical endpoint.
Currently, the feature is being offered as a dedicated preview build specifically tailored for 64-bit x86 architecture running Debian and Ubuntu-derived Linux distributions. RustDesk stated that it is seeking extensive real-world testing and user feedback from the community before integrating the Wayland unattended access feature as a default capability across its main release channels.
The development comes at a time when major proprietary competitors continue to face limitations in supporting Wayland natively for remote access. Remote software provider AnyDesk still mandates the use of the older Xorg display server for incoming Linux remote desktop sessions. Similarly, commercial competitor TeamViewer maintains that its Wayland support remains in an experimental phase across mainstream Linux desktop environments.
RustDesk noted that following the stabilization of the current preview build on Debian and Ubuntu systems, it intends to expand unattended Wayland compatibility to additional Linux distributions. Planned targets for future rollouts include distribution families such as Fedora and Arch Linux, prior to incorporating the capability into standard production builds of the RustDesk software client.
The organization is encouraging Linux administrators and users—particularly those utilizing multi-monitor configurations on Wayland—to evaluate the preview release to help identify operational issues and verify performance stability across diverse hardware and desktop setups.
