Software-Defined Cars Face Uncertainty Over Lifespan and Long-Term Support
As automakers shift toward computer-centric vehicles and digital updates, industry experts question how long connected cars will remain functional as hardware ages.

While the average age of passenger vehicles in the United States has reached a record 12.8 years according to data from Mobility Global, the rise of software-defined vehicles is raising questions about whether tech-heavy automobiles can match that longevity. As carmakers increasingly rely on centralized computers, cloud connectivity, and over-the-air updates to manage vehicle capabilities, industry analysts warn that multi-thousand-dollar automobiles risk facing shorter operational lifespans similar to consumer electronics, as first reported by CNBC Business.
Unlike traditional automobiles built primarily around mechanical components, software-defined vehicles depend on high-powered computing platforms to run drivetrain systems, infotainment, and driver-assistance features. With new car prices averaging nearly $50,000 in the U.S., automakers argue that connected architectures allow vehicles to improve post-purchase. Rivian Chief Software Officer Wassym Bensaid told CNBC Business that the company builds hardware with seven to 10 years of processing headroom for feature upgrades, while committing to provide critical safety and security patches indefinitely regardless of vehicle age.
However, hardware limitations have already created challenges for early adopters of connected auto technology. Tesla announced in 2016 that all its production vehicles contained the necessary hardware for full self-driving capabilities, a position Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk reiterated in 2019 regarding the company's Hardware 3 computer. In April, Musk acknowledged that vehicles equipped with Hardware 3 will require upgraded cameras and computing hardware to operate unsupervised autonomous driving software, leading Tesla to offer affected owners hardware retrofits or trade-in allowances.
The auto sector has also seen feature losses caused by infrastructure transitions. When AT&T retired its 3G wireless network in 2022, millions of connected vehicles lost access to automatic emergency notifications, live navigation, and remote service diagnostics, even though the underlying mechanical systems continued to function normally. AutoForecast Solutions Senior Vice President of Vehicle Forecasting Sam Fiorani noted that forecasters cannot yet determine how long modern software-centric vehicles will remain fully functional, pointing out that existing hardware is already struggling to run complex newer software builds.
The transition is also affecting secondary auto markets and vehicle valuation. J.D. Power Vice President of Data Insights Alex Yurchenko explained that while software dependence may not fundamentally disrupt overall used-car sales, the market could divide into distinct tiers: vehicles that continue to receive active manufacturer support and those whose over-the-air updates have lapsed. Yurchenko added that standardizing used-car valuations remains difficult because buyers and dealers lack uniform frameworks to assess software-enabled features, subscription access, and advanced driver-assistance calibration.
Repair access presents another operational hurdle as proprietary software platforms require specialized digital tools, diagnostic permissions, and vehicle data access. To comply with expanding right-to-repair legislation, Bensaid stated that Rivian plans to issue an upcoming software update that will unlock an internal service menu. The feature will enable owners to run system diagnostics using an integrated AI assistant, complete basic maintenance procedures directly, and access recommended third-party repair networks.
Industry researchers suggest that regulatory policy may ultimately need to step in as vehicle software ages out of official manufacturer support cycles. Telemetry Vice President of Market Research Sam Abuelsamid noted that while carmakers have strong liability incentives to maintain basic safety updates, regulators should eventually require companies to open-source or release software code to independent repairers if official support is discontinued. Fiorani added that long-term software maintenance could also reshape auto enthusiast culture, as classic car restorers face unprecedented hurdles preserving proprietary digital code.
