Zuckerberg Defends Smart Glasses Privacy by Comparing Capture Signals to Phones
Meta's chief executive argues that smart glasses provide clearer visual capture indicators than smartphones as the company rolls out new wearable hardware and the Muse AI assistant.
Meta Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg has offered a new defense against privacy criticisms of the company's Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, arguing that the devices provide clearer visual cues when taking photos than mobile phones do, according to discussions highlighted on The Verge's technology podcast, The Vergecast .
In at least two recent interviews, Zuckerberg pointed out that Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses feature a light that turns on to signal when a photo is being taken, whereas smartphones lack a dedicated capture light. In one interview, Joanna Stern countered that holding a phone up to take a picture is itself a noticeable physical action.
The privacy debate comes alongside recent Meta Connect announcements, including the debut of Muse, Meta's artificial intelligence assistant. The Vergecast noted that Muse has shifted sentiment around Meta's AI efforts by making agentic capabilities broadly accessible, though adoption depends on whether users trust Meta with their privacy when linking personal services to the assistant.
Meta also expanded its wearable hardware portfolio with new audio-only Ray-Ban Meta glasses and new Meta VR Glasses. Separately, the podcast covered the release of Googlebooks laptops, which feature mobile and desktop software integrations aimed at competing with Windows.
