Anthropic Discloses $161 Billion in Broadcom Compute Commitments as Lease Backstops Mount
Amended IPO filings detail $895 billion in total infrastructure obligations, with Broadcom taking the largest supplier share and guaranteeing tens of billions in server leases.

Anthropic has committed to $895 billion in computing power purchases and leases, with semiconductor designer Broadcom holding the largest single vendor allocation at $161 billion, according to an analysis of amended regulatory filings reported by Yahoo Finance (https://www.tikr.com/blog/anthropics-down-quarter-highlights-broadcoms-161-billion-risk?ref=yahoofinance&tlnk=yf-261106-4p9pf5mh&.tsrc=rss).
The disclosures outline an unprecedented capital pipeline across the frontier artificial intelligence sector. Broadcom's $161 billion position exceeds commitments allocated to cloud hyperscalers, including Alphabet at $121 billion and Amazon at $110 billion or more. According to the amended S-1 registration statement, Anthropic expects to incur $448 billion of its total commitments by the end of 2030, with roughly $70 billion maturing over the next 12 months against $131 billion in cash and equivalents.
Beyond direct silicon supply agreements, Broadcom has taken on substantial credit risk to finance Anthropic's buildout through special purpose leasing vehicles. A $35 billion financing package established in June carries a Broadcom residual value backstop of up to $29 billion. Disclosures from a subsequent $63 billion rack financing structure arranged by institutional lenders added potential liabilities capped at $43 billion, bringing Broadcom's cumulative maximum credit exposure across the two facilities to roughly $72 billion. Under the terms, Broadcom covers shortfalls if the customer defaults and the repossessed racks fail to reach specified recovery thresholds upon resale.
The commitments underpin Broadcom's long-term corporate forecast. Management projects its artificial intelligence semiconductor revenue will expand from $58 billion in fiscal 2026 to $115 billion in fiscal 2027 and $230 billion in fiscal 2028. Operational roadmaps allocate Anthropic 5 gigawatts of compute capacity in 2027 and 10 gigawatts in 2028, representing half of the 30 gigawatts Broadcom anticipates delivering across those two fiscal years.
The scale of those obligations is colliding with shifting operating dynamics at the AI lab. While Anthropic generated $16.96 billion in third-quarter revenue—a 47% sequential increase from the second quarter and up 1,127% year over year—its compute and infrastructure expenses rose 78% over the same period, reversing earlier trends where top-line expansion outpaced hardware costs. Speaking on the 20VC podcast, venture investor Jason Lemkin noted that Anthropic experienced a sequential decline in net new bookings during the third quarter relative to the second quarter.
Investor scrutiny over customer concentration and credit backstops has pressured Broadcom's valuation, pushing its forward price-to-earnings multiple to 19 times, below its five-year historical average of 24. Market observers expect further clarity on shipment schedules and order durability when Broadcom reports its fiscal fourth-quarter financial results in December.
