Sweden's Tech Sector Rebounds as Venture Funding Hits $2.8B Year-to-Date
A new generation of founders and increased interest from U.S. investors are driving a funding resurgence in Stockholm's startup ecosystem.

Sweden's technology ecosystem is undergoing a resurgence in startup creation and investment activity, driven by fresh venture capital deployments and an expanding pipeline of companies spanning artificial intelligence and autonomous transportation.
According to capital tracking data from Dealroom first reported by TechCrunch Venture, tech startups in Sweden have raised $2.8 billion in funding year-to-date, with total capital deployment projected to reach at least $5 billion by the end of the year. The figure marks a rebound from the $3.2 billion generated across the ecosystem last year, though it remains below the peak of $8.5 billion raised during the 2021 venture market boom.
The ongoing acceleration is being propelled by a new wave of early-stage enterprises, including legal artificial intelligence startup Legora and software creation tool provider Lovable. These newcomers build upon an ecosystem previously established by global tech brands such as audio streaming platform Spotify and fintech firm Klarna, alongside scaling ventures like health technology company Neko Health and autonomous freight developer Einride.
Speaking on TechCrunch's Equity podcast, Cherry Ventures General Partner Sophia Bendz attributed the country's steady startup output to a broad cultural pivot toward founder creation. Bendz, who previously worked at Spotify, noted that top local talent historically gravitated toward traditional corporate tracks such as investment banking or management consulting.
Bendz explained that career preferences have increasingly shifted toward building new enterprises, with tech workers prioritizing operational autonomy and financial upside. She added that the ecosystem is benefiting from veteran tech leaders who are mentoring incoming entrepreneurs and reinvesting capital into new ventures. For example, Spotify co-founder Daniel Ek subsequently co-founded health monitoring venture Neko Health.
The circulation of talent within active startups is further accelerating local market dynamics, according to Bendz. Employees at fast-growing firms including Lovable and Legora are increasingly leaving to launch independent companies, generating a continuous flywheel of entrepreneurship.
International venture capital firms, particularly from the United States, are expanding their physical presence in the region to capitalize on the deal flow. Bendz noted that American investors are regularly traveling to Stockholm to meet with early-stage founders and deliver term sheets, reflecting international confidence in the mature Swedish talent base.
