Northern Gritstone, an investment company established to fund university spinouts in the north of England, is establishing a physical outpost in San Francisco. The firm intends to use the new location to connect its portfolio startups with American institutional investors and facilitate international scaling opportunities.

The expansion plans, which were reported by Sifted following coverage in The Times, involve hiring a US-based venture partner. The incoming executive will focus on providing portfolio companies with access to North American networks, capital sources, and strategic business development opportunities. Northern Gritstone does not plan to make direct investments in American startups.

To fund the initiative, Northern Gritstone is allocating approximately $1 million toward opening the San Francisco location and completing the necessary recruitment. The move is designed to build a direct bridge between academic research hubs in northern England and the Silicon Valley technology ecosystem.

Formed in 2021, Northern Gritstone was launched to commercialize intellectual property emerging from the University of Leeds, the University of Manchester, and the University of Sheffield. The investment entity has since expanded its investment charter to encompass research coming out of the University of Liverpool, raising £382 million in cumulative funding to date.

"Our portfolio companies are rooted in the North, but our ambitions are global when it comes to scaling them," said Northern Gritstone chief executive officer Duncan Johnson in a statement. He noted that gaining access to broader pools of American capital, talent, and strategic networks will accelerate the international expansion of university research, leading to improved commercialization outcomes and higher exit valuations.

In comments made to The Times, Johnson emphasized that US investors demonstrate a stronger risk appetite for technology sector investments, while American markets present superior procurement opportunities for rapidly growing companies. He further observed that UK-based technology firms frequently trade at a discount compared to US peers, making proactive engagement essential for attracting North American investors.

Northern Gritstone's existing investment portfolio spans several deep-tech enterprises. Key holdings include enzyme engineering firm Imperagen, photonics chip producer Optalysys, and semiconductor scaleup Pragmatic Semiconductor.

By establishing a operational base in San Francisco, Northern Gritstone aims to streamline cross-border expansion for its academic spinouts as they seek larger follow-on capital rounds from global venture firms.
