IDEXX Acquires Veterinary AI Scribe CoVetAI to Drive Diagnostic Workflows
The undisclosed transaction links ambient voice capture software with cloud practice tools across more than 10,000 veterinary clinics globally.

Veterinary diagnostics provider IDEXX Laboratories (NASDAQ: IDXX) has acquired CoVetAI, an artificial intelligence startup that transcribes and organizes clinical notes during patient examinations, according to a report by Yahoo Finance (https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/ai/articles/idexx-idxx-bets-ai-scribe-201730587.html). IDEXX announced the transaction on Sept. 16, though financial terms were not disclosed.
CoVetAI develops software designed to record appointment dialogue in real time and automatically assemble records of observations, treatments, and procedures. IDEXX plans to integrate the ambient tool into its cloud practice management software, which is currently operating in more than 10,000 clinics worldwide, alongside a direct integration with its VetConnect PLUS platform. The company also intends to maintain CoVetAI's interoperability with non-IDEXX practice software and continue supporting competing scribe applications.
The integration aims to surface pertinent patient information during clinical consultations, potentially prompting veterinary staff to order appropriate diagnostic testing. The software acquisition aligns with IDEXX’s ongoing rollout of automated hardware, including its inVue Dx analyzer. The company placed more than 1,600 inVue Dx units during the second quarter, expanding its active installed base past 9,000 instruments.
In its second-quarter earnings reported on Aug. 4, IDEXX posted 10% revenue growth, led by an 11% increase in recurring diagnostics revenue driven by higher test volumes. Diluted earnings per share increased 18%, or 15% on a comparable basis when excluding foreign exchange fluctuations and tax benefits associated with stock-based compensation.
IDEXX raised its full-year earnings forecast following the second quarter, offset by increased planned spending on commercialization and product development. Because financial terms of the CoVetAI transaction were not released, the immediate earnings impact and long-term diagnostic lift generated by the tool remain unquantified.
Market data indicates stable investor positioning. Institutional hedge fund ownership in IDXX rose from 62 to 63 funds during the second quarter, with short interest representing 3.04% of the float. As of Sept. 18, the stock traded at a forward price-to-earnings multiple of 30.86.
