OpenAI Acquires Camera Tech Startup Glass Imaging for $300M, Report Says

OpenAI has agreed to purchase Los Altos, California-based mobile camera technology firm Glass Imaging in a deal valued at upwards of $300 million, according to reporting from The Wall Street Journal first cited by TechCrunch AI. The acquisition brings specialized computational photography tech and optical artificial intelligence expertise to the ChatGPT developer as it expands its footprint in advanced technology.

Glass Imaging was established in 2019 and had previously secured approximately $30 million from investors. The startup was founded by Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, two former Apple engineering leaders who originally headed the development team behind Apple's Portrait Mode feature. Their experience in mobile image processing directly informed the architectural direction and product focus of Glass Imaging.

Rather than applying generative or corrective software after a photograph has already been recorded, Glass Imaging utilizes neural networks to analyze physical camera systems directly. The technology trains customized deep learning models on specific smartphone optics and sensor combinations, optimizing image capture in real time at the moment the camera shutter is pressed to overcome physical hardware constraints inherent to small mobile sensors.

OpenAI did not immediately respond to inquiries seeking comment on the transaction. However, the purchase comes amidst persistent industry reports that the artificial intelligence giant is quietly preparing its own suite of consumer hardware products, including smart earbuds, dedicated AI companion devices, and mobile smartphones.

The acquisition builds upon OpenAI's broader efforts to expand beyond software development into consumer electronics. In 2025, OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman and former Apple design executive Jony Ive revealed they were collaborating on a hardware project named io, which OpenAI subsequently acquired in a massive $6.5 billion transaction.

By integrating Glass Imaging's hardware-focused neural processing capabilities, OpenAI stands to bolster its internal sensor and camera design resources. The deal emphasizes a growing strategy among major artificial intelligence entities to pair custom neural model development with specialized physical hardware optimization.
