Altimeter Capital founder and Chief Executive Brad Gerstner has rejected recent apocalyptic warnings regarding artificial intelligence, describing the widespread discourse about potential human extinction risks as disconnected from actual industry practices.

Appearing on CNBC’s "Halftime Report" on Friday, as first reported by CNBC Technology, Gerstner criticized what he labeled as exaggerated fear-mongering surrounding advanced models. He stated that critics are turning a blind eye to the unprecedented safety measures established early in the development cycle, differentiating the current AI expansion from previous tech waves like web search and social networking.

"What I didn't like this week is these hyperbolic scare tactics, which I think are hiding behind a political agenda," Gerstner said during the broadcast. He added that public debates were failing to acknowledge the "extraordinary steps already being taken" by development teams to mitigate risks ahead of deployment.

The investor's comments arrive amidst heightened scrutiny over AI risk management. Earlier in the week, an Anthropic researcher resigned and issued a statement on X accusing leading AI developers of "gambling with our lives" as they race to build superintelligent systems.

Altimeter holds significant positions in several top-tier artificial intelligence companies, including Anthropic and its primary rival OpenAI. The firm's venture portfolio also encompasses enterprise software and data analytics platforms such as Glean and Databricks.

Defending the sector's self-regulation and safety posture, Gerstner noted that over his 25-year tenure in Silicon Valley, he has never observed a new technology receive such substantial upfront investment in safety and alignment research.

He concluded that narratives suggesting the industry is recklessly expanding without safeguards mischaracterize reality. "If you listen to the echo chamber this week, you would think that we were hurtling ahead with total disregard to safety, and it's simply not true," Gerstner said.
