Anthropic Claims 65% of Vercel AI Gateway Spend Despite Token Price Premium
New data from Vercel shows Anthropic dominating developer expenditure while open-weight lab DeepSeek overtakes Google in volume.

Artificial intelligence lab Anthropic captured nearly two-thirds of developer spend routed through Vercel's AI Gateway in July 2026, expanding its commercial lead across enterprise software deployments despite charging significantly higher prices than rival model providers.
Data compiled by web development and infrastructure platform Vercel, first reported by TechRadar Pro, showed Anthropic capturing 65.1% of all gross expenditure across Vercel’s API gateway during the month. The research lab accounted for 30% of total processed token volume, demonstrating a strong premium on its underlying computational output.
Anthropic has consistently led platform spending since Vercel began publishing monthly gateway analytics in December 2025. The company has secured more than 60% of total spending share in every recorded month over that period, driven by enterprise adoption of its Claude foundational models.
The lab's financial dominance occurred even as its average cost per token remained 4.4 times higher than the industry average across all surveyed AI developers. Vercel defines the price-per-token metric as total aggregate dollars spent divided by total token volume processed across its gateway service.
The high pricing came alongside a broader market shift toward reduced token costs. Total expenditure across all monitored AI platforms grew by 37% month-over-month in July, while the average cost per token dropped by 13.6%. The decrease followed a 20% rise in average token pricing in May and flat pricing through June.
Anthropic's overall price per token contracted slightly in July compared to previous months. Analysts attributed the pricing adjustment to the restored public availability of Claude Fable 5, which had previously undergone a temporary access suspension. Enterprise adoption continued to benefit from interest in updated Claude releases and anticipation surrounding the gradual rollout of Mythos 5.
The Vercel dataset also recorded major positional shifts among alternative model providers. Chinese artificial intelligence firm DeepSeek built on momentum from May and June to surpass Google in total token volume during July, claiming second place overall behind Anthropic in processed throughput.
DeepSeek's ascension verified an earlier prediction from Vercel that an open-weight research lab would eventually secure the second spot in volume processing. However, the contrast between DeepSeek's high token volume and Anthropic's aggregate revenue dominance underscores an expanding divide between high-volume, low-margin model usage and premium enterprise spending within the software industry.
