Fourth Plaintiff Joins Class-Action Lawsuit Accusing xAI's Grok of Generating Child Abuse Material
A Wyoming woman alleges her stepfather used the chatbot to generate and distribute thousands of explicit synthetic images of her as a child.

Artificial intelligence startup xAI is facing expanded legal claims after a fourth plaintiff joined a class-action lawsuit alleging that the company's Grok chatbot was utilized to manufacture child sexual abuse material.
The latest complaint involves a Wyoming resident identified as Jane Doe 4, who states that her stepfather relied on the Grok platform to create thousands of fake sexually explicit images of her during her childhood. The expansion of the suit to include Jane Doe 4 was reported by Engadget, based on initial coverage from The Washington Post.
Court documents detail that the stepfather generated upwards of 7,000 explicit synthetic photographs using the AI tool. Among the manipulated files was an authentic photograph taken when the victim was 11 years old, which was transformed into a sexually explicit image and subsequently traded online.
The lawsuit notes that state and local law enforcement agencies subsequently executed a search warrant on the stepfather's electronic equipment in connection with a child sexual abuse material investigation. Two days following the law enforcement raid, the stepfather died by suicide inside his vehicle.
Jane Doe 4 has integrated her claims into litigation originally brought by three teenagers in Tennessee. The founding plaintiffs alleged that xAI's software was used without consent to construct sexually explicit deepfakes of their likenesses. Attorneys representing the class argue that the scope of potential victims covered by the action could number in the thousands of minors.
The updated filing follows intensified governmental scrutiny directed at xAI and its technology ecosystem. In January, California Attorney General Rob Bonta opened an investigation into the startup to examine allegations regarding the generation of nonconsensual deepfake nudes depicting adult women and underage victims.
During the same month, regulatory authorities in the European Union initiated an inquiry focused on social media platform X, examining whether the network maintains adequate safeguards to prevent the proliferation of AI-generated child sexual abuse media across its service.
xAI has not issued an official public response regarding the latest additions to the court complaint, and requests for comment regarding the litigation remain pending.
