Google Offers Free One-Year AI Pro Subscriptions to College Students

Google has launched a promotional campaign targeting higher education, offering eligible college students in the United States a free one-year subscription to its high-tier AI Pro service. The tier typically carries a subscription fee of $20 per month or $200 annually.

The subscription package focuses heavily on expanding access to Google’s artificial intelligence tools. Under the plan, students receive four times the standard usage thresholds for the Gemini chatbot platform.

In addition to expanded Gemini limits, subscribers gain access to Google's Spark agentic platform. The tier also embeds Gemini capabilities directly into core Google Workspace applications, including Gmail and Google Docs.

Beyond AI capabilities, the promotional tier includes significant cloud storage and health-tracking perks. Users receive 5TB of cloud storage alongside a subscription to Google Health Premium, which syncs data across Fitbit devices and compatible third-party health trackers.

As part of the promotional push, first reported by Engadget, Google is also introducing a discounted bundle option. Students can pair the AI Pro subscription with YouTube Premium for a combined fee of $9 per month, providing lower-cost access to the video and music platform.

For students located outside the United States, the company is rolling out a separate international offer. Non-U.S. students are being offered a free one-year subscription to Google AI Plus, an entry-tier plan that normally costs $5 per month.

The international AI Plus package provides access to Gemini Omni with double the standard chatbot usage caps. The tier also grants international student accounts 400GB of cloud storage capacity.

The promotional offerings come with standard subscription auto-renewal terms. Once the initial 12-month free period expires, accounts will automatically transition to full-priced billing unless canceled prior to the renewal date.

The automatic transition could present challenges for users who heavily utilize the storage allocations, as maintaining access to the expanded 5TB or 400GB tiers will require paid renewals or data migration before the term ends.
