Google Unveils Gemini Student Hub and Integrates Deep Research Tools

Google is introducing a suite of artificial intelligence tools tailored for academic use as part of an upcoming back-to-school push, centered around a new dedicated student hub within its Gemini platform. As first reported by The Verge, the central repository is designed to consolidate coursework management by allowing users to compile study notebooks, build custom flashcards, and complete practice quizzes.

The platform's study notebooks are receiving functional upgrades as well, including support for embedded graphs and visual images. Additionally, the system can scan class syllabi to extract critical deadlines and exam schedules, automatically adding those dates to the user's Google Calendar.

Alongside the centralized hub, Google is expanding its conversational voice feature, Gemini Live, by incorporating Deep Research capabilities. The update allows the assistant to assemble comprehensive research briefs on intricate topics and discuss the findings directly with the user.

To handle the longer compute times associated with generating detailed reports, Gemini Live can run these analytical queries in the background. Users can navigate away from the conversation or lock their smartphone screen, and the application will send a notification once the report is finalized.

Google is also planning enhancements for its visual search tool, Google Lens, within the primary Google mobile application in the coming weeks. Students will be able to capture photos of worksheets or study materials to receive detailed explanations, contextual breakdowns of difficult concepts, and corrective guidance if mistakes are identified.

To drive adoption, Google is offering promotional subscription packages aimed at higher education users. Eligible students residing in the United States can receive a free one-year subscription to Google AI Pro, which includes 5TB of cloud storage, Google Health Premium, higher usage thresholds for Gemini, and full integration across Google's workspace software.

International students will be eligible for a Google AI Plus plan. That tier includes 400GB of cloud storage and reduced Gemini operational caps relative to the American subscription package.
