Leaked Nvidia DLSS 5 Code Extracted by Modders for Unofficial AI Rendering Tests

An unreleased iteration of Nvidia Corp.’s Deep Learning Super Sampling technology has surfaced online after code was inadvertently included in an early-access build of the upcoming video game NBA 2K27. Independent modders managed to isolate the unannounced DLSS 5 software files and deploy the artificial intelligence rendering framework across a variety of existing titles, as first reported by The Verge. The leak provides an early, unauthorized look at the semiconductor giant's next-generation graphical processing capabilities ahead of its scheduled commercial launch later this year.
Members operating within the RenoDX modding channel on Discord initially discovered and extracted the DLSS "Neural Rendering" component from the NBA 2K27 build, according to earlier reports by technical publications Notebook Check and VideoCardz. The modding group first successfully applied the extracted software files to Remedy Entertainment’s action title Control before expanding their efforts to adapt the AI upscale routines for other interactive software. Modders subsequently distributed files enabling the unofficial rendering tech across a wide selection of titles, including Skyrim, Cyberpunk 2077, and Grand Theft Auto V.
Demonstration videos published by modders testing the leaked code illustrate significant alterations to character models and environment graphics when the neural features are enabled. In Control, activating the mod's "Neural Uplift" setting distinctly alters the features of protagonist Jesse Faden. While her face maintains a smooth, uniform appearance when the setting is turned off, enabling the neural preset makes her complexion appear paler while accentuating laugh lines and creating dark, makeup-like smudges beneath her eyes.
Additional testing in other games reveals similar post-processing shifts and texture modifications across various visual styles. In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the mod applies a filter effect to main character CJ’s face while enhancing ambient city textures, deepening environmental shadows, and shifting global lighting from a warm tone to a cool tone. In tests involving Palworld, the leaked DLSS 5 files altered shadow intensity while adding facial and edge definition to the game's stylized, cartoony character models.
The unauthorized rendering features carry heavy computational costs that severely diminish real-time hardware performance. Modders evaluating the implementation in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth noted that turning on the neural features halved their frame rate while warning that switching between configuration presets consumes substantial amounts of video RAM. In another test recorded with Grand Theft Auto V, adjusting the mod's parameter sliders caused real-time performance to plummet from 90 frames per second down to 29 frames per second.
Hardware compatibility for the leaked software has also broadened as modders analyze the extracted binaries. While initial testing of the unofficial DLSS 5 mod was restricted to Nvidia's upcoming RTX 50-series graphics processing units, technical reports from VideoCardz confirm that modders have successfully configured the code to run on current-generation flagship hardware, including Nvidia's RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 graphics cards.
Public reaction to the leaked neural rendering capabilities has been mixed among players and hardware enthusiasts. While some users contend that the AI-driven adjustments improve visual fidelity by sharpening textures and introducing dynamic light depth, others have criticized the output as "AI slop." Opponents argue that the automated modifications function similarly to generic image filters rather than genuine graphics processing enhancements, creating unnatural visual changes across game environments.
Nvidia officially announced DLSS 5 in March, describing the technology as an advanced neural network designed to deliver real-time photorealistic lighting and materials to digital graphics. The company slated the technology for an official release this fall. However, early public demonstrations showcasing DLSS 5 across Resident Evil Requiem, Starfield, and Hogwarts Legacy triggered immediate pushback from gamers who criticized character models for appearing generic or "yassified." Amid concerns that AI rendering could undermine original art direction, Nvidia Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang defended the technology, asserting that the tool "doesn't change the artistic control" established by software developers.
