Meta Rolls Out Opt-Out for AI Training on Smart Glasses Visual Data

Meta has begun rolling out an opt-out setting within its Meta AI app that allows smart glasses owners to prevent the company from storing visual data for artificial intelligence model training.

According to reporting by Engadget , Meta is notifying users of the update through an in-app pop-up. The prompt notes that while the glasses can identify objects or translate menus, users can opt out of sharing visual data from those experiences for product improvement, ensuring data is not retained after real-time processing.

The toggle is located inside the Meta AI app under the paired glasses' settings menu by selecting "Meta AI" and navigating to "store visual data from AI experiences." To modify the preference, the glasses must be removed from their charging case and actively connected to the smartphone. Users managing multiple pairs must apply the setting to each device individually.

Meta noted that opting out restricts certain context-dependent tools, such as "visual reminders" where users instruct the assistant to remind them about an item they are viewing. It remains unclear whether additional features are limited by disabling data storage.

Alongside the setting, Meta updated its help center documentation to clarify how visual data is handled, confirming that model training pipelines include both automated processing and manual review by human workers. Meta specified that visual data retention applies only to specific AI features like Live AI and does not include standard photos or videos captured when the device's physical recording LED is illuminated.
