OpenAI has introduced an interface update for ChatGPT called "Intelligent UI," designed to supplement standard text responses with custom interactive visual elements. Powered by OpenAI's GPT-6 model, the feature began rolling out to paid subscribers on Wednesday and is scheduled to reach free-tier users on Thursday, according to reporting by Wired (https://www.wired.com/story/openai-chatgpt-intelligent-ui-is-more-show-than-tell/).

The update alters how the chatbot presents structured information. Rather than relying solely on text blocks supplemented by standard web imagery, the interface generates custom UI components—such as interactive anatomical diagrams, dynamic financial calculators, and cabin seating maps—when the system determines a visual format provides clearer utility.

In pre-launch demonstrations tested by Wired, queries generated responsive visual widgets tailored to individual prompts. A request for a slug anatomy diagram produced an interactive graphic with selectable buttons for anatomical parts including the upper tentacles and muscular foot. A prompt for a San Francisco apartment affordability tool rendered visual sliders for income and expenses to calculate take-home pay ratios. A third prompt comparing four cabin layouts across Alaska Airlines and Delta Air Lines generated an interactive seat map with tap-enabled seat details and highlighted exit rows.

OpenAI stated that visual components will not accompany every query output, aiming to prevent interface clutter. "We have a design team that spent a lot of time figuring out when adding a diagram, chart, or buttons adds value versus when it's starting to feel cluttered," Aarush Selvan, a product manager at OpenAI, told Wired. Users who prefer standard text responses can prompt ChatGPT to generate fewer visual outputs.

The launch follows broader industry efforts to implement generative interfaces, including Google's rollout of "generative UI" in Google Search earlier this year to display interactive models such as adjustable black hole physics demonstrations. OpenAI's deployment brings dynamic interface generation to its user base of more than one billion people as artificial intelligence platforms expand beyond purely text-based workflows.
