Healthcare startup Nolla Health has launched an artificial intelligence pilot in Utah that scans users' faces and autonomously writes medical prescriptions for acne treatments, as reported by The Verge via Bloomberg.

The company says the rollout marks the first time a U.S. service has been permitted to generate initial medication orders autonomously using AI, rather than processing renewals for existing prescriptions. Utah began permitting AI systems to renew certain prescriptions earlier this year.

The program operates under a tiered model of physician oversight. For the first 100 patients, two physicians must review and approve each AI-generated prescription before it is issued. For the next cohort up to 500 patients, doctors will review prescriptions retrospectively after issuance. Beyond 500 patients, physicians will audit a sample of at least 10 percent of prescriptions each month and review all cases involving adverse side effects or clinical escalations.

In its announcement, Nolla Health positioned the software, dubbed Nolla Derm, as a triage layer intended to reduce routine clinical workloads. “The pilot is designed to complement, not replace, physicians,” the company stated, adding that handling mild cases allows dermatologists to focus on higher-risk patients.

The service costs $4.99 per month and is restricted to Utah residents aged 18 and older with mild-to-moderate acne. Nolla Health noted that its software routes patients to human physicians when it cannot confidently select a treatment. The AI model is currently authorized to prescribe eight distinct skin treatments.
