After 27 years at Google, the veteran computer scientist is building AI startup Discovery Loop while maintaining a rigorous athletic training schedule.

Jeff Dean, the veteran computer scientist who recently departed Google after nearly three decades to launch the artificial intelligence startup Discovery Loop, has shared details regarding his weekly athletic regimen and the schedule surrounding his transition. As first reported by GeekWire, the 58-year-old executive revealed his personal routine on social media platform X following a presentation at the KDD 2026 conference in Jeju, South Korea.
Dean spent 27 years at Google after joining the technology giant as its 30th employee. During his tenure, he played a primary role in building the company's core computing infrastructure and served as its chief scientist. Prior to joining Google, Dean earned a doctorate in computer science from the University of Washington in 1996.
His new venture, Discovery Loop, is structured as a public benefit corporation focused on utilizing artificial intelligence to automate the scientific method. The startup aims to conduct thousands of parallel experiments to accelerate research across multiple disciplines, including drug discovery, materials science, and machine learning.
In social media posts detailing his daily routine, Dean outlined an extensive training program that includes frequent commuting by foot or bicycle. The executive runs or bikes to work three to four directions per week, covering eight kilometers in each direction. His schedule also incorporates two weekly gym workouts, two yoga sessions, and two games in a 25-and-over soccer league, alongside an extended bicycle ride or run on weekends.
Addressing questions from social media users regarding how he manages the high volume of physical activity, Dean provided additional details about his daily habits. He noted that he wears cushioned footwear to protect his knees, showers at his workspace, and averages approximately seven hours of sleep per night. Dean also confirmed that engaging in physical exercise frequently aids his problem-solving process.
During his presentation at KDD 2026, Dean shared a slide mapping out his final 48 hours at Google between August 5 and August 7. On Wednesday, August 5, he managed hundreds of incoming messages regarding his departure while completing a yoga session and playing a soccer match before sleeping at 2:30 a.m. He resumed answering correspondence at 6:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 6, before closing his laptop for the final time that afternoon.
Dean officially concluded his tenure at Google at midnight on Thursday, remaining technically unemployed for one second before his transition to Discovery Loop. In internal communications cited by GeekWire, co-founder John Cook highlighted the physical intensity required to participate in competitive soccer twice a week alongside a major career transition. The disclosure offers insight into the operational tempo of one of Silicon Valley's foundational computing figures as he launches his latest artificial intelligence effort.
