Helion Energy Expands Series G Round to $500M as Commercialization Timeline Faces Scrutiny
The Washington-based fusion startup added $35 million from pension and sovereign wealth investors while continuing work on its Microsoft power agreement.

Everett, Washington-based fusion startup Helion Energy has expanded its Series G funding round by $35 million, raising the total capital brought in for the transaction to $500 million, the company announced Tuesday. The update follows an initial $465 million closing for the round reported in June.
In a post published on LinkedIn, Helion co-founder and Chief Executive Officer David Kirtley stated that the expanded financing brought several additional backers into the fold, including crossover funds, pension funds, and sovereign wealth investors. With the new capital infusion, Helion's cumulative equity funding since inception has surpassed $1.5 billion as the firm works to build commercial fusion power generation systems capable of supplying electricity to the power grid.
The funding expansion arrives amid rapid headcount growth for the organization. Last week, Helion established its inaugural office in downtown Seattle to support a total workforce that now exceeds 800 employees. The company is seeking to become the first commercial provider of fusion power, aiming to generate clean energy by replicating the atomic physics that power stars.
Helion faces strict execution milestones tied to a major power purchase agreement signed three years ago with Microsoft. Under the terms of that agreement, the startup committed to supplying fusion electricity to a Microsoft data center in Central Washington by 2028. Helion began construction on the 50-megawatt power generation facility, named Orion, in July 2025. When the deal was initially announced, Helion expected Orion to come online by 2028 and hit its output target of 50 megawatts or more following a one-year ramp-up phase.
However, the precise schedule for reaching full output has drawn industry attention. News outlet Axios recently reported that a Helion executive indicated full power output might not be achieved until 2030. The report also pointed to two scientific publications by plasma physicists that questioned whether Helion's device architecture can output enough net power to supply grid operations, though Helion has posted technical responses addressing those points on its corporate FAQ page.
To resolve engineering bottlenecks ahead of full-scale plant deployment, Helion has been testing core subsystem components at smaller scales. Tech news outlet GeekWire reported in May that the company assembled a specialized R&D testbed called "Tiny Merge" at its research facility. The smaller device was built to gather empirical data and resolve core technical questions that larger prototypes had not settled before engineers finalize power plant specifications.
Despite technical challenges and timeline questions, leadership emphasized that investor participation reflects broad market interest in firm clean energy capacity. Kirtley noted in his statement that while meeting technical benchmarks remains the company's highest priority, the expanded round demonstrates sustained demand and investor confidence in Helion's trajectory toward delivering fusion energy to the electric grid.
