Broadcom Backlog and AI Silicon Outlook Anchor Bull Case Despite Post-Earnings Dip
A drop in Broadcom shares highlights a disconnect between near-term market expectations and multi-year AI semiconductor targets, according to analysts and commentary on CNBC.

A recent pullback in Broadcom shares reflects a divergence between short-term market sentiment and underlying multi-year fundamentals, according to market commentators and Wall Street research. Speaking on the September 14 episode of CNBC's Mad Money, host Jim Cramer argued that Broadcom had been unfairly caught up in a broader selloff across artificial intelligence equities triggered by perceived caution from AI developers Anthropic and OpenAI.
Broadcom shares fell more than 10% over the trailing month and traded roughly 150 points below their June high, according to a report by Yahoo Finance (https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/jim-cramer-shares-strong-verdict-174700887.html). The stock dropped approximately 7% from its September 2 close following early September earnings, as quarterly revenue guidance met consensus expectations rather than delivering an outsized beat, lowering its forward price-to-earnings multiple to 18.1 times.
Operating results for the fiscal third quarter demonstrated strong expansion across custom silicon and networking hardware. Consolidated revenue rose 86% year over year to $29.6 billion, while AI semiconductor revenue jumped 221% to $16.7 billion, representing approximately 56% of total quarterly sales.
Near-term revenue visibility is underpinned by contracted customer commitments, with remaining performance obligations reaching $179.2 billion. For the fiscal fourth quarter, management projected consolidated revenue of $34.8 billion and AI semiconductor revenue of $21.7 billion, representing a 236% increase from the prior year. The guidance raised Broadcom's full-year fiscal 2026 AI revenue forecast to $58 billion, up from an earlier estimate of $56 billion.
Chief Executive Officer Hock Tan outlined longer-term expansion targets during the same September 14 broadcast, stating that industry caution has not altered the company's internal roadmap. Broadcom projects AI semiconductor revenue to reach approximately $115 billion in fiscal 2027 and $230 billion in fiscal 2028, supported by custom accelerator demand from hyperscale customers including Alphabet, Meta, Anthropic, and OpenAI.
Sell-side analysts have broadly reiterated positive stances despite the near-term valuation compression. Truist lowered its price target while keeping a Buy rating, citing the durability of the multi-year $230 billion target. Morgan Stanley increased its price target to $505, while the average target across 29 tracked firms stood at approximately $518, implying roughly 45% upside from current price levels.
Institutional positioning remained steady through the period, with 170 hedge funds holding Broadcom shares in the second quarter compared to 173 in the prior quarter, led by Fisher Asset Management's 15.1 million shares. Similar guidance-related pullbacks previously occurred at peers such as Nvidia, Marvell Technology, and Arista Networks before underlying enterprise infrastructure spending reasserted itself.
