Broadcom is scheduled to report its financial results for the third quarter of fiscal 2026 after the closing bell on Sept. 2. The upcoming earnings release comes during a period of relatively modest stock performance for the chip designer, which has logged a 6% share price gain year-to-date in 2026. For the third quarter, Broadcom has guided for revenue of $29.4 billion, marking an 84% increase compared to the same period a year ago. Wall Street consensus estimates project earnings per share to reach $3.24, representing a 92% year-over-year surge, according to figures reported by Yahoo Finance.

A major catalyst behind Broadcom’s projected top-line expansion is the rapid acceleration of the optical networking market. Market intelligence from Goldman Sachs projects that total industry revenues for optical networking could surge from $15 billion in 2026 to $154 billion by 2028, driven by intense demand for high-bandwidth connectivity in data infrastructure where supply remains constrained. Broadcom manufactures a range of advanced networking components to serve this market, including high-growth co-packaged optics (CPO) units used in modern enterprise and AI datacenters.

Broadcom management previously revealed that networking products currently account for approximately 40% of the company's total artificial intelligence chip revenue. However, as production and shipments of dedicated custom AI processors scale up, executive projections indicate that networking will transition to about 30% of total AI chip revenue. With overall AI chip sales forecasted to hit $56 billion in 2026, a 30% contribution would establish Broadcom’s AI networking division as a $17 billion annual revenue driver.

In addition to networking hardware, the expansion of custom AI processor development is serving as a primary operational engine for Broadcom. AI research organization OpenAI recently introduced its first proprietary artificial intelligence processor, named Jalapeño, which was co-developed in partnership with Broadcom. OpenAI intends to begin deploying the Jalapeño chip across its server infrastructure this year. Furthermore, the AI lab confirmed that it is already collaborating with Broadcom on designing the next two generations of its in-house processing hardware.

The co-development of custom silicon allows major technology organizations and AI firms to tailor hardware architecture directly to their software workloads while diversifying away from standard third-party graphics processors. Broadcom’s multi-generational pipeline with OpenAI positions the semiconductor manufacturer as a primary partner for cloud computing providers seeking long-term custom silicon infrastructure.

From a valuation perspective, Broadcom shares are currently trading at 19 times forward earnings estimates. This multiple sits below the technology-heavy Nasdaq-100 index, which currently trades at a forward earnings multiple of 24. The valuation discount comes even as consensus forecasts call for Broadcom to achieve a 70% increase in earnings during the current fiscal year, followed by an additional 70% earnings growth rate in the subsequent fiscal year.

While broader semiconductor equities have experienced significant volatility throughout 2026, Broadcom’s underlying metrics show accelerating growth across both custom AI silicon and optical networking product lines. Analysts observe that the convergence of its $56 billion AI chip revenue target, expanding custom processor deployments, and momentum in high-speed optical hardware could make the Sept. 2 financial report a critical milestone for the chipmaker's fiscal trajectory.
