Celestica Shares Fall 11% as AI Infrastructure Sell-Off Spreads to Canadian Markets

A sharp pullback in semiconductor and data center spending hits Canada's primary AI hardware proxy, while enterprise software multiples remain stretched.

Shares of Celestica dropped 11.43% to 292.49 Canadian dollars on Thursday, battered by an accelerating global retreat from artificial intelligence hardware and infrastructure equities, according to market reporting published by Yahoo Finance (https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/canadian-tech-stock-getting-crushed-205740646.html?.tsrc=rss).

The decline deepens a steep multi-week drawdown for the Toronto-based electronics manufacturing services company, which has served as the Toronto Stock Exchange's most direct proxy for generative AI hardware buildouts and data center capital expenditure. Celestica is down roughly 39.5% over the past month and sits approximately 54.9% below its 52-week high.

The slump coincided with severe pressure across international semiconductor and hardware benchmarks. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index tumbled as much as 11% during trading—its sharpest single-day contraction since March 2020, as reported by Reuters. Market analysts characterized the move as an aggressive unwinding of crowded AI positioning, following an October rotation that drained more than $2 trillion from the Nasdaq 100.

The downturn extended across Canadian depositary receipts tied to U.S. technology leaders. Palantir DRC slid 9.61% to 11.66 CAD, while Nvidia DRC dropped 9.06% to 9.64 CAD, tracking a 9.20% drop in Nvidia's primary U.S. listing. Computing and digital infrastructure company Hut 8 declined 3.17% to 65.96 CAD, extending its 30-day retreat to roughly 46%.

In contrast, Canadian enterprise software and telecommunications stocks held up or posted modest gains, highlighting an ongoing rotation into predictable cash flows. Constellation Software gained 0.93% to 3,498.14 CAD, CGI added 0.34% to 115.37 CAD, and Descartes Systems Group edged up 0.25% to 132.55 CAD, while Open Text slipped 0.67% to 36.84 CAD. Telecommunications provider BCE climbed 3.90% to 30.63 CAD.

However, that defensive rotation carries valuation risks. Market screening data cited by Investing.com noted Constellation Software trading around 55 times trailing earnings and Descartes Systems Group near 44 times, with 14-day relative strength index readings near 70—levels typically associated with overbought conditions that provide slim downside cushion if broader risk appetite deteriorates further.

The immediate trajectory of the AI hardware complex now hinges on corporate earnings. Nvidia is scheduled to report quarterly results on Nov. 17, providing the primary catalyst that will either validate high-density infrastructure spending or prolong the sell-off across upstream component suppliers.
