Bentley Motors has unveiled its first fully electric vehicle, the Torcal SUV, introducing a fourth core model line alongside the Continental GT, Flying Spur, and Bentayga. According to reporting by Wired (https://www.wired.com/story/bentley-wants-its-torcal-suv-to-break-the-curse-of-the-luxury-ev/), the luxury marque enters the pure battery-electric market under Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Frank-Steffen Walliser, who labeled the new vehicle "one of the best Bentleys ever."

The five-seat SUV employs an electric motor on each axle and a 400-kilowatt charging architecture capable of replenishing the battery from 10 percent to 80 percent in 16 minutes. Driving range reaches up to 375 miles on the European WLTP testing cycle, with an estimated 330 miles under U.S. EPA ratings. In the sporting Torcal S variant, the dual motors generate 888 metric horsepower (PS) and 1,350 Newton-meters of torque, delivering a zero-to-60-mph sprint in 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 162 mph. The standard core trim outputs 821 PS and 1,194 Nm, achieving zero to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds with a 155-mph ceiling.

Bentley is positioning the model to retain traditional brand loyalists during its electrification transition, noting in launch literature that the Torcal serves as a benchmark for future vehicles "regardless of powertrain." The launch coincides with pronounced headwinds across the high-end electric segment: Lamborghini shelved its Lanzador EV after CEO Stephan Winkelmann noted buyer demand dropped near zero, Mercedes-Benz sold only 1,450 electric G-Class units in Europe through April 2025, and Rolls-Royce Spectre sales have declined by nearly half.

The base Torcal starts at $218,000 (£173,300), rising to $258,200 (£199,300) for the First Edition S. That pricing structure positions the SUV against high-end luxury alternatives such as the Range Rover Electric Autobiography ($208,000), while starting well above standard Range Rover Electric models ($138,000). At 4,983 millimeters in length and 2,016 millimeters in width, the Torcal is 161 millimeters shorter than the Bentayga and sits roughly 20 centimeters lower than the electric Range Rover.

Exterior styling replaces traditional radiator venting with an illuminated solid acrylic crystal front grille and a tapering rear roofline. Inside, the cabin incorporates power doors, an OLED instrument setup, and a downward-curving central display without a passenger-side screen. Interior trims feature specialized wool engineered with Fox Brothers alongside veneers formed from 1,000 layers of walnut off-cuts and recycled paper pressed to under a millimeter thick. Options include massage seats and a 28-speaker, 1,780-watt Naim audio system supporting Dolby Atmos 7.1.

Bentley opted for analog production methods for several sensory features rather than purely synthetic software. Screen animations depicting light refraction were filmed using physical cut crystal to capture natural optical imperfections. The synthetic driving soundscape was arranged using live musical instruments—including drums, viola, and bass guitar—to mirror the cadence of a V8 engine, while physical recordings of leather strikes and glass rims provide indicator and voice-assistant tones.

The onboard tech suite integrates an augmented reality head-up display, facial recognition for driver profile configuration, digital smartphone keys, and an array of 25 sensors, radars, and cameras. The driver assistance system includes narrow-road space detection that can autonomously reverse the vehicle to a recognized clearance point to allow oncoming cars to pass.

The launch arrives against broader industry pressures, including 50,000 job reductions at Bentley parent Volkswagen Group, even as Bentley remains financially resilient. The brand also faces incoming competition from Chinese manufacturers such as Xiaomi, whose SkyNomad electric SUVs are set to arrive in Europe next year at lower price points with advanced cabin features. Walliser indicated Bentley will lean into brand heritage dating back to its 1919 founding to distinguish its vehicles from newer global market competitors.
