Ford Unveils Fathom: An Electric Midsize Truck Starting at $28,350

Ford has formally named its inaugural vehicle utilizing the Universal EV Platform: the Fathom. This electric midsize truck is anticipated to enter the market with a starting price of $28,350, or $29,945 including destination fees. The Fathom aims to compete in the evolving electric truck segment, positioning itself against upcoming models such as Slate's electric pickup.

The manufacturer states that the name 'Fathom' was selected to convey the company's exploratory approach to new possibilities within vehicle design and functionality. Notably, Ford appears to be pursuing a distinct strategy for an affordable electric pickup compared to some rivals.

Unlike certain competitors that offer more basic configurations, Ford confirms that every Fathom model will include a high-resolution touchscreen as a standard feature. Additionally, the truck will support hands-free highway driving through its BlueCruise system, incorporate digital key capabilities, and feature integrated Apple Maps.

The Fathom is also designed with bi-directional power functionality. This allows the vehicle to potentially supply electricity for tools, small household appliances like refrigerators, or even serve as an emergency power source for an entire home.

Regarding interior space, Ford indicates that the Fathom will offer greater passenger volume than a Toyota RAV4, while also providing substantial cargo capacity across its bed and front trunk, known as a frunk.

While the Fathom's official design has not yet been fully revealed, and clear images are not present on Ford's website or in its promotional videos, early spy photographs from The Autopian suggest a design that falls between the dimensions of a Ranger and a Maverick, featuring a more contemporary and angular aesthetic.

The introduction of the Fathom represents a significant step for Ford in its shift towards electric vehicles, especially following the discontinuation of F-150 Lightning production earlier in the year. Ford's current all-electric lineup is limited to the Mustang Mach-E and E-Transit, which provides fewer options for competing with major EV players like Tesla and Rivian, as well as international electric vehicle manufacturers.

The Fathom's competitive pricing and extensive list of standard features, in comparison to other market entrants like Slate's offering, could position it as an attractive option for consumers seeking an affordable electric truck. Ford expects pre-orders for the Fathom to commence in early 2027, with deliveries slated to begin later the same year.
