Ford Unveils 'Fathom' as Name for New Affordable Electric Truck

Ford has announced the name of its new affordable electric pickup truck: the Ford Fathom. This four-door vehicle marks a significant step in the company's electric vehicle strategy.

The Fathom will be constructed on Ford’s new UEV platform, specifically engineered for electric vehicles. This foundational architecture is designed to support the vehicle's advanced functionalities.

A notable technological advancement in the Fathom is its new zonal architecture for electronics. This system is intended to significantly reduce the complexity and amount of wiring typically found in modern vehicles. Instead of numerous discrete electronic control units, the Fathom will utilize a select number of powerful computers, each managing multiple domains of the vehicle's operations.

Externally, the Fathom is expected to be comparable in size to a Ford Maverick, but with a more streamlined design. Despite its compact exterior, the interior is projected to offer more cabin space than a Toyota RAV4, prioritizing occupant comfort and utility.

Functionally, the Fathom will support bidirectional charging, allowing the vehicle to not only draw power but also supply it back to a home or grid. Ford's BlueCruise system, a hands-free, partially automated driver-assist technology, will be available as an optional feature.

The official starting price for the Ford Fathom has been confirmed at $28,350. This figure does not include an additional $1,595 delivery charge, bringing the total cost closer to $30,000 before any optional upgrades.

When compared to competitors, the Fathom positions itself as an accessible option in the electric truck market. For instance, the Blank Slate pickup is noted to be slightly less expensive, though this comparison often depends on selected features and upgrades. The Fathom aims to appeal to consumers seeking a four-door pickup with enhanced utility, especially those for whom it might serve as their primary vehicle, without the need for manual window operation or self-installed rear seats found in some more basic alternatives.
