General Motors has introduced the 2027 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport X, a 721-horsepower, all-wheel-drive hybrid sports car designed to blend traditional internal combustion power with high-output electric propulsion. The vehicle represents the automaker's latest effort to expand its performance vehicle lineup while adapting to broader consumer shifts toward hybrid technology. First reported by The Verge following multi-day road testing across New York and New England, the new Grand Sport X directly replaces the former Corvette E-Ray, shifting Chevrolet's electrified Corvette strategy from grand touring toward track-oriented performance.

Positioned by internal development teams as a scaled-down counterpart to the flagship 1,250-horsepower Corvette ZR1X, the Grand Sport X inherits its electrified front axle assembly directly from the record-setting ZR1X that achieved 233 mph at Sonoma Raceway. The vehicle features an electric motor producing 186 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque powered by a compact 1.9-kilowatt-hour battery pack situated in the central spine of the chassis between the driver and passenger. The motor operates independently with no mechanical connection to the rear axle, functioning to provide immediate torque fill during gear transitions from the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Under the rear engine cover, the Grand Sport X houses a new 409-cubic-inch naturally aspirated LS6 V-8 engine. The powertrain generates 520 pound-feet of torque on its own—marking the highest torque figure for any naturally aspirated V-8 engine in production car history—and incorporates cylinder deactivation alongside a high 13:1 compression ratio. These engineering updates yield a 28 percent reduction in emissions compared to the previous engine iteration while enabling a 25-mpg highway rating on the standard Stingray model. In total, the combined hybrid system generates 721 horsepower and 655 pound-feet of torque, surpassing competing models such as the $260,000 McLaren Artura.

Chevrolet quotes an official zero-to-60 mph launch time of 2.4 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 10.4 seconds at 131 mph for the Grand Sport X coupe. These acceleration metrics surpass both the outgoing E-Ray and the track-focused Corvette Z06. To support its performance capabilities, the vehicle comes equipped with standard carbon-ceramic brakes, a limited-slip rear differential, and a MagneRide suspension system capable of reading road conditions 1,000 times per second to dynamically alter damper viscosity. The rear wheels are fitted with wide 345/25/ZR21 Michelin Pilot Sport all-season tires housed within a body that is 3.6 inches wider than standard models.

Pricing for the 2027 Corvette Grand Sport X begins at a base price of $112,195, positioning the vehicle at less than half the $227,395 cost of the top-tier ZR1X. By contrast, a standard non-hybrid 2027 Grand Sport with a 535-horsepower rear-wheel-drive setup starts at $88,495, creating a $23,700 premium for the hybrid edition's upgraded brakes and front-axle electric drive system. The entry-level 2027 Corvette Stingray starts at $73,495. Available factory options on the Grand Sport X include a $1,995 tuned performance exhaust with four center-mounted outlets and a $2,995 front-end lift system designed to clear steep driveway angles.

The control architecture of the vehicle provides driver-configurable power modes that manage energy consumption and battery regeneration. Pressing the "Charge +" control activates an Endurance mode that maintains battery charge levels over extended track sessions using engine power and regenerative braking, while a Qualifying mode optimizes systems for single-lap speed. Driver convenience features include a Stealth mode that permits pure electric operation at speeds up to 50 mph to reduce neighborhood noise, as well as a Push-to-pass function for instant full-system power. Speaking to reporters, Keith Badgley, lead development engineer for the program, emphasized that tuning decisions were deliberately biased toward aggressive track handling rather than subdued touring behavior.

The market release of the Grand Sport X arrives during a period of strong commercial growth for hybrid powertrains across the automotive industry. Hybrids captured 15.4 percent of total U.S. vehicle market share through June 2026, outselling battery-electric vehicles by nearly a three-to-one margin. Current U.S. hybrid sales are heavily dominated by Toyota, Hyundai, and Honda, which collectively control 90 percent of the domestic hybrid market. Toyota and Lexus sold 600,000 hybrid vehicles in the first half of the year, while Kia achieved record overall sales driven by a 115 percent increase in its hybrid lineup.

Despite broad market adoption, General Motors currently offers only two hybrid options in its North American commercial portfolio, both belonging to the Corvette family and optimized strictly for performance output rather than fuel economy. Having previously focused its corporate capital expenditures almost exclusively on battery-electric powertrains, GM is currently reworking its product plans to reintroduce fuel-saving plug-in hybrid models to mass-market showrooms starting next year to regain ground against foreign competitors.
