Google has entered the graphic design market with the launch of Google Pics, a new image creation and editing application integrated directly into its suite of productivity software, first reported by TechCrunch AI. The tool is designed to compete with established creative platforms like Canva and Adobe Express by enabling users to generate visual assets through text prompts rather than conventional layout tools.

The application is powered by Google's Nano Banana image generation model. Google plans to roll out the service over the coming weeks to most Google Workspace business customers, as well as individual consumers who subscribe to the premium Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra tiers.

Google Pics is tailored for routine design tasks across workplace and personal settings. Users can leverage the tool to generate digital illustrations, promotional posters, social media visual assets, and other corporate graphics. The application is integrated starting today into Google Docs and Google Slides, with expansion to Google Drive scheduled for a later phase.

The platform's approach contrasts with established design ecosystems such as Canva. While Canva permits independent artists, illustrators, and photographers to list original templates and graphics on a marketplace to earn royalty income, Google Pics constructs images using artificial intelligence models trained on existing creative work.

Google Pics also diverges from traditional software tools like Adobe Express, which creators typically use to construct visual layouts from scratch. Instead of relying on manual object placement, Google's tool centers on prompt-based creation, generating visual compositions based on descriptive text input.

In addition to initial image creation, the application includes fine-grained image editing functionality. Users can isolate discrete objects within an image to transform or reposition them, adjust formatting, and alter or translate text embedded directly within visual files.

To support group workflows, Google Pics includes real-time collaborative editing features. The system also generates multiple visual variations for each user prompt, allowing collaborators to evaluate different renditions and select the option best suited to their project.
