Plaion Replai Unveils Modernized Atari 800XL Hybrid Computer Console
The updated 8-bit machine features HDMI output, USB connectivity, a mechanical keyboard, and legacy software compatibility.

Hardware manufacturer Plaion Replai has unveiled a modernized version of the classic Atari 800XL hybrid home computer and gaming console, according to reporting from Engadget (https://www.engadget.com/2281551/the-atari-800xl-hybrid-gaming-console-is-back-after-decades-in-obscurity/). The remake updates the vintage 8-bit system with modern display and peripheral standards while preserving its computing and gaming architecture.
While the Atari 2600 remains the company's most prominent console in popular memory, the Atari 800 computer line maintained a sizable footprint before being retired in the early 1990s. The 800XL originally debuted as an aesthetic and physical refresh of the 1979 original.
The new edition integrates modern ports, outputting video over HDMI and adding USB ports for accessories and game loading. The unit comes pre-loaded with 25 titles, including Centipede, Crystal Castles, Millipede, and Missile Command.
The console retains backward compatibility through an integrated cartridge slot that accepts original physical cartridges. Users can also load titles from the Atari 400 and Atari 5200 via USB. The package includes a period-accurate joystick updated with USB recharging.
True to its hybrid computer identity, the unit includes a full-sized mechanical keyboard and native access to the Atari Basic coding platform, allowing users to write software or run vintage homebrew programs from the 1980s.
Plaion Replai, which previously produced a modern Commodore 64 reproduction and has a Neo Geo project in development, has opened preorders for the Atari 800XL at $220. Shipments are scheduled to begin April 23, 2027.
