Reddit is developing a video experience that will let users watch popular posts or listen to narrated versions in the background. CEO Steve Huffman told investors that the company expects to begin testing the format later this year, extending Reddit beyond the text, image and discussion interfaces that define its core product.

The concept reflects behavior already visible elsewhere. Millions of TikTok posts pair text-to-speech narration of Reddit stories with gameplay, cooking or other unrelated footage. Those videos turn community posts into short entertainment programs, often generating engagement and advertising value on platforms other than Reddit.

Bringing the format inside Reddit could help the company retain that attention and create additional advertising inventory. It may also make long posts more accessible to users who prefer listening while commuting or completing other tasks. Reddit has not explained how creators or original posters will be credited when their writing becomes narrated content.

The feature arrives during a wider shift toward vertical video. Facebook, Netflix, Disney+, Peacock, HBO Max, Amazon and LinkedIn have all added or tested short-form feeds. Reddit said video in comments, introduced in June, already represents more than 10% of video posts, suggesting its communities are willing to adopt richer formats.

Rights and compensation could become contentious if Reddit monetizes narrated versions of posts. Community members provide the underlying stories without expecting their writing to become platform-produced audio or video. Reddit should specify whether authors can opt out, how usernames appear and whether successful adaptations produce any direct benefit for the people who created the material.

The format could help people with visual impairments or limited time, but accessibility requires more than automated narration. Voices need accurate pronunciation, clear labeling and controls for speed, captions and transcripts. Reddit should let communities decide whether their posts can be transformed and give authors a way to correct mistakes. Moderators may also need tools to prevent the video layer from rewarding sensational posts over useful discussion. The feature can broaden consumption without weakening Reddit's identity only if the original thread remains central and easy to reach.

The challenge is preserving context. Reddit stories often depend on comments, updates and community-specific norms that can disappear when a post becomes a standalone clip. A successful product should link narration back to the original discussion and give authors meaningful control. Otherwise Reddit may reproduce the extraction it is trying to bring home.
