Safa Elmali Launches Lofi Cities, a Web Audio-Powered Ambient Work Tool

Independent developer Safa Elmali has launched Lofi Cities, a free browser-based application that pairs procedurally generated audio with animated pixel-art cityscapes. Announced on Hacker News and hosted at loficities.com, the web tool operates entirely within desktop and mobile browsers without requiring software installations, user registration, or account setup. Designed as an ambient background for study and focus, the platform displays urban environments alongside music streams generated directly in the client rather than streamed from pre-recorded audio files.

At the core of Lofi Cities is real-time sound synthesis built on the browser's native Web Audio API. Rather than streaming static recordings or audio samples, the application algorithmically generates chord progressions, basslines, drum grooves, and lead melodies on the fly, finishing tracks with simulated analog characteristics such as tape wobble and vinyl crackle. Users can select from nine musical styles—including jazzhop, felt piano, ambient pads, bossa nova, synth city pop, lofi deep house, chill guitar, minor-key trumpet arrangements, and medieval lute compositions—and can adjust tempo, toggle between chill and upbeat moods, or isolate instrument stems such as drums or chords.

The visual interface features 11 metropolitan environments rendered in a 480-by-270 pixel-art aesthetic. Included locations comprise Paris, Tokyo, New York, London, Rio de Janeiro, Istanbul, Hong Kong, Sydney, San Francisco, Hamburg, and Amsterdam, with each scene running on a four-minute seamless visual loop. An environmental control panel allows users to manually switch weather conditions among clear skies, rainfall, snowfall, and falling autumn leaves. Weather transitions dynamically introduce corresponding audio layers, such as rain or wind, which sit alongside location-specific ambient sounds like traffic, harbor bells, or water that can be adjusted via individual volume sliders.

To assist work and study sessions, Lofi Cities incorporates several built-in productivity utilities. A focus timer provides interval options of 25-minute work periods with five-minute breaks or 50-minute blocks with 10-minute breaks, accompanied by auditory chimes. The application also includes a sleep timer that gradually fades out audio over durations ranging from 15 to 90 minutes. For multitasking across desktop applications, a picture-in-picture mini-player mode keeps the animated scene floating above other windows, complemented by full-screen viewing, interface concealment shortcuts, and 1080p PNG frame capture.

For livestreamers, the platform includes integration settings for Open Broadcaster Software. Broadcasters can embed specific city views into streaming layouts using targeted URL parameters to bypass manual interface controls and trigger automated playback. The application also features anonymous social presence mechanics, displaying active viewer counts per city alongside daily visitor totals. Users can interact in shared city scenes by releasing floating icons or paper lanterns that appear across active viewers' screens. The system stores preferences and session identifiers in local storage rather than using cookies, purging tracking data after approximately 25 hours.

The web app includes an automated tour mode that cycles between cities at set intervals or follows global nighttime by displaying locations closest to 1:00 AM local time. Because visual assets and audio generation routines execute client-side, the application can function offline once loaded and can be installed as a Progressive Web App. Elmali supports the free platform through voluntary contributions on Buy Me a Coffee, pixel-art billboard advertising slots within each city scene, and commercial packages of high-definition 60-fps video loops sold on Gumroad.
