As American manufacturers continue to navigate persistent labor constraints, enterprise hardware startup TraceMySpace is proposing a targeted physical solution to boost operational productivity. Citing data from PwC showing U.S. manufacturing averaged roughly 420,000 open positions in 2025, alongside a Deloitte projection that 1.9 million sector jobs could remain unfulfilled over the next decade, the company argues that optimizing physical tool storage can recover valuable working hours lost to routine daily tasks.

First reported by The Next Web, TraceMySpace was founded by Cody Spears to engineer tailor-made laser-cut foam drawer and case organizers for industrial, motorsport, and aerospace environments. To receive a custom layout, client facilities arrange their tools and components, measure the dimensions, and upload a photographic layout to the company, which then manufactures a custom foam insert matching the precise specifications of the equipment.

Spears frames the fitted foam inserts as a form of visual process management that immediately highlights missing equipment. “Having an insert with a spot for each tool means you know where it is every time, and you know when it is missing every time,” Spears said. The visual indication provided by an empty silhouette allows technicians to inspect tool sets before traveling to field locations, while also streamlining shift transfers and end-of-day inventory checks on factory floors.

The startup also emphasizes task-based spatial arrangement within drawers to reduce redundant physical exertion. Spears advises placement of high-use equipment toward the front of storage units and aligning lower-use items further back according to operational workflow sequence. “It sounds minor, but when those movements are repeated throughout an eight- or 12-hour workday, they can add up,” Spears noted regarding the cumulative time savings achievable over extended shifts.

The technique is gaining traction in speed-critical industries, including professional motorsport. TraceMySpace has partnered with NASCAR racing crews to organize specialized mechanics' tools and critical vehicle replacement parts within custom-cut drawers. Rapid accessibility is crucial during pit stops and emergency garage repairs, where misplaced items can cost critical track positions. “When seconds count to get the car back on the track, they need to know exactly where those parts are,” Spears emphasized.

Beyond speed, tool organization serves a vital role in high-consequence environments like aerospace manufacturing, where unrecorded equipment poses severe safety risks. Rapid recognition of missing items helps facilities execute response protocols and satisfy compliance audits without prolonged operational delays. “The bigger picture is knowing that something is gone without spending hours searching and hoping it is not somewhere it could cause damage,” Spears explained.

While enterprise workforce initiatives frequently focus on hiring, talent retention, and digital automation, Spears suggests that analyzing micro-level physical bottlenecks at individual workstations can yield immediate efficiency gains. Examining daily movement patterns, tool access routes, and storage clearings provides industrial managers with a practical mechanism to maximize the productive hours of existing operational staff.
