Apple Wallet Prepares Digital ID Expansion Across Four Additional States

Apple is preparing to expand digital driver's license and state identification card support in Apple Wallet to four additional states, bringing its digital credential infrastructure to more regions across the U.S. The upcoming expansion covers North Carolina, Oklahoma, Utah, and Virginia, expanding on the 14 states and territories where the feature currently operates.

North Carolina's Division of Motor Vehicles verified that it will introduce a state-level mobile ID framework this December, as first reported by Engadget. The initial rollout will take place through a dedicated state application named NC Wallet, which state authorities noted is separate from an existing cryptocurrency app operating under the same moniker.

Following the initial release of its proprietary application, the North Carolina DMV plans to broaden support to major tech platforms—including Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, and Samsung Wallet—in early 2025. North Carolina residents holding valid state driver's licenses or state identification credentials will be eligible to set up their digital credentials at no additional cost.

Once deployed, the digital identification cards will be accepted at Transportation Security Administration checkpoints across more than 250 airports nationwide. Local aviation facilities offering support include Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Raleigh-Durham International Airport, enabling travelers to verify their identity at security checkpoints using mobile devices.

Law enforcement agencies in North Carolina will also accept mobile IDs as legitimate identification during traffic stops and official encounters. However, state officials noted that if an officer does not possess a compatible digital reader during a stop, drivers may be asked to verbally state the information listed on their license.

State transportation officials advise residents to continue carrying their physical identification cards as a secondary backup. The agency noted that physical cards remain necessary while commercial establishments, including retailers and restaurants, complete the technical transition toward supporting digital ID scanning tools.

While North Carolina has finalized its rollout timeline, launch schedules for Oklahoma, Utah, and Virginia have not yet been formally announced. Code findings originally uncovered by MacRumors indicate Apple Wallet integration is in development for those three states. Apple Wallet currently supports digital state credentials in 14 states and Puerto Rico, including Arizona—which was the first state to adopt the system—alongside Maryland, Colorado, Georgia, Ohio, Hawaii, California, Iowa, New Mexico, Montana, North Dakota, West Virginia, Illinois, and Arkansas.
