Smart ring manufacturer Oura is facing a class action lawsuit alleging that the company utilized deceptive marketing strategies to misrepresent how precisely its wearable hardware tracks sleep stages, as reported by ZDNET.

The legal complaint was brought by Madison Surber, who purchased an Oura Ring for $503 last year under the impression that the device provided precise sleep analytics. Surber claims she paid an unwarranted premium for hardware that fails to deliver on its advertised capabilities.

According to the lawsuit, the smart ring does not possess the sensor architecture required to monitor the neurological metrics that define distinct sleep cycles. Specifically, the filing argues that accurate sleep staging requires measurements of brain wave activity, ocular movement, cardiac functions, muscle movement, and finger photoplethysmography, which the wearable lacks.

"Oura's AI models are doing guesswork as to what may be happening, based on improper inputs, and thus taking advantage of desperate consumers who struggle with their sleep or are concerned for their health by selling faulty AI-based inference as reliable science," the complaint states.

To support its claims, the suit references research published in the journal Nature, which evaluated the device's performance. The academic study concluded that the smart ring achieved a success rate of 53 percent when identifying specific sleep stages, demonstrating what the legal filing characterizes as limited overall accuracy.

The outcome of the litigation could carry wider ramifications for the broader health wearables market, which relies heavily on translating peripheral biometric indicators—such as heart rate variability, skin temperature, and breathing frequency—into diagnostic sleep metrics. The lawsuit highlights this foundational dispute directly, stating, "Sleep happens in the brain, not on one's finger."

In response to the allegations, Oura defended its underlying methodology and technical claims in a statement provided to ZDNET. "We stand behind our science, research, and accuracy claims," the company said. "There is well-documented, peer-reviewed independent scientific evidence that sleep stages are associated with distinct, measurable, reproducible changes in physiology, which is why these signals are reliably used to classify sleep stages."
