Google has expanded its clean energy procurement strategy through a major agreement with geothermal technology developer Fervo Energy, securing a 396-megawatt power purchase agreement designed to feed clean electricity into the tech giant’s infrastructure, as first reported by Yahoo Finance. The milestone deal represents the largest enhanced geothermal power purchase agreement recorded to date, reflecting an intensifying effort among major computing providers to secure continuous power for expanding artificial intelligence workloads.

The surge in artificial intelligence development has triggered unprecedented capital expenditure across the technology industry, centered largely on constructing energy-intensive data centers. However, hyper-scale cloud operators increasingly face severe grid constraints, including lengthy interconnection queues and public pushback against utility rate hikes for local residents. These headwinds have forced major technology firms to explore alternative, dedicated generation methods capable of supplying steady electricity without burdening regional power grids.

Google and Fervo Energy first established their working relationship in 2021 through a pilot initiative known as Project Red. That initial collaboration served as a commercial proof of concept for Fervo’s specialized extraction methods. The partnership gained further momentum in June 2024, when Fervo finalized a 115-megawatt power purchase agreement involving both Google and utility provider NV Energy, a structure aimed at bringing fresh geothermal resources online while insulating public utility customers from development costs. Around the same timeframe, Fervo committed to building out up to 3 gigawatts of total geothermal generation capacity.

Under the terms of the formal agreement executed on September 1, Fervo will supply energy generated from its Cape Station facility located in Utah, with initial power deliveries slated to begin by 2028. The contract includes an additional option for Google to expand its total offtake by another 600 megawatts. If fully exercised, the agreement would scale Google's total capacity allocation from Fervo to approximately 1 gigawatt by June 2030.

At the heart of the partnership is Fervo’s Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) technology. Conventional geothermal energy production has historically been restricted to rare geographical locations near active volcanoes or tectonic plate boundaries where underground hot water naturally sits near the surface. In contrast, Fervo utilizes adapted horizontal drilling techniques borrowed from the oil and gas sector to bore deep enough into hot rock subterranean layers anywhere, enabling geothermal power generation across far broader geographic areas and offering true around-the-clock baseload supply.

The new commitment brings Fervo’s total contracted power sales portfolio to approximately 1.1 gigawatts, offering clearer forward revenue visibility as the company moves toward full commercial operation. The deployment will proceed in structured stages: Phase I aims to deliver roughly 100 megawatts, with commercial operations projected to commence between late this year and early 2027. Phase II calls for an additional 400 megawatts of capacity, utilizing Fervo’s modular 'GeoBlock' framework—an arrangement of eight standardized 50-megawatt generation units designed to streamline engineering, reduce factory costs, and accelerate simultaneous construction to meet the 2028 deadline.

To finance this capital-intensive expansion, Fervo relies on significant cash reserves generated during its public market listing on May 12, where the company raised approximately $2.2 billion. Management indicated the capital injection allows Fervo to fund near-term infrastructure buildouts without resorting to high-yield debt instruments. The firm anticipates capital expenditures will range between $850 million and $900 million over the coming 12 months, while forecasting continued net losses over the next several years as it continues heavy investments to scale generation capacity.

For Google and the broader hyperscale technology sector, Fervo’s project serves as a critical real-world test for enhanced geothermal systems as an enterprise-grade solution to the ongoing data center energy bottleneck. As tech giants seek round-the-clock zero-carbon power to fulfill ambitious sustainability goals without compromising uptime for AI models, all eyes will remain on Fervo’s ability to hit its initial Phase I delivery benchmarks on schedule.
