Google Maps Legacy Android Navigation Icons to Googlebook Function Keys
The F1, F2, and F3 keys on Googlebooks adopt the classic triangle, circle, and square controls first introduced in Android 5.0.

Google has mapped classic Android navigation controls across the function key row of its Googlebook laptops, according to a report by The Verge (https://www.theverge.com/tech/1007409/androids-physical-navigation-buttons-are-back-on-googlebooks-but-not-the-way-you-think). The hardware layout assigns the mobile operating system's historical triangle, circle, and square icons directly to the F1, F2, and F3 keys.
The geometric icons first appeared in 2014 with Android 5.0 Lollipop as standard software buttons for back, home, and app switching prior to the widespread adoption of gesture-based navigation. While modern Android releases up through Android 17 retain the three-button arrangement as an accessibility and navigation option on phones, Googlebook OS integrates the controls directly into hardware keys across all models.
On Googlebook keyboards, the F1 key uses a left-pointing triangle to serve as a back button, offering a hardware fallback for mobile Android applications that are not fully optimized for mouse input or desktop windowing. The F2 key features a circle icon that minimizes all active applications to return to the desktop. A second tap does not restore minimized windows, which is handled via a separate desktop peeking shortcut.
The F3 key displays a square icon that functions as an application overview switch, tiling open windows across the screen in a layout similar to macOS Mission Control or Windows Task View.
While dedicated keys such as the Quick Insert button and the Google logo key debuted several years ago on select Chromebooks, the standardized navigation iconography establishes a uniform function-row configuration across the Googlebook hardware lineup.
