Major Smartwatch Lines Reach Final Year of Software Support in 2026

A significant shift in software maintenance schedules is set to take effect across the wearable tech industry in 2026, as flagship hardware from Apple, Google, and Samsung reaches the end of guaranteed platform updates, as reported by Engadget. While affected hardware will remain operational, the sunsetting of support means these devices will no longer receive new system features or essential security patches.

Apple is planning one of its largest support cutoffs to date with the upcoming release of watchOS 27, expected in mid-September 2026 following a summer beta cycle. The software update will formally drop support for five models: the Apple Watch Series 6, Series 7, Series 8, the second-generation Apple Watch SE, and the original Apple Watch Ultra.

The discontinuation reflects hardware processing requirements, specifically processor performance needed for modern Siri capabilities present in the Series 9 chip and subsequent silicon. Apple typically maintains operating system support for three to six years per generation. Because the Series 8 and original Ultra both launched in 2022, 2026 marks the end of their four-year lifecycle.

Compatibility for watchOS 27 will be limited to the Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, Series 11, Apple Watch Ultra 2, Ultra 3, and the third-generation Apple Watch SE. Apple's active flagship lineup currently features the Series 11, Ultra 3, and third-generation SE.

Google is following a tighter support timeline for its hardware ecosystem. The Pixel Watch 2, launched in October 2023, carries a guaranteed update schedule that terminates on October 1, 2026. After that date, the device will cease receiving both Wear OS platform updates and security patches. Google maintains a strict three-year support policy from a device's initial release date on the Google Store, representing the shortest commitment among primary smartwatch vendors, despite offering seven years of support for its Pixel smartphone line.

Samsung utilizes a tiered support policy that divides operating system upgrades from security maintenance. The company commits to four major Wear OS releases and five years of security patches per generation. Under this framework, the Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, released in August 2022, will receive their final Wear OS upgrades by December 31, 2026, though security updates will continue beyond that point.

Earlier hardware in Samsung's lineup has already passed major support milestones. The Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic, released in August 2021, have already exhausted their Wear OS upgrade eligibility and are approaching the end of security patch distribution. Conversely, the Galaxy Watch 6 series and the Galaxy Watch FE remain covered for OS upgrades through December 2027 and December 2028, respectively.

Although smartwatches past their support window will continue to perform basic duties like exercise tracking and notification mirroring, hardware vendors warn that unpatched vulnerabilities pose security risks. The loss of security updates creates potential exposure for sensitive health records and payment credentials stored on unmaintained devices.
