Microsoft Quantum Head Dismisses Scientific Skepticism Regarding Majorana Particle Findings
Microsoft's quantum computing chief indicated disinterest in satisfying scientific doubts concerning the company's research into Majorana quasiparticles.

Microsoft's multi-billion dollar initiative to develop a quantum computer faces challenges, with its leader, Zulfi Alam, expressing indifference toward scientific community skepticism. Last year, Alam's team asserted they had successfully fragmented an electron into Majorana quasiparticles, a key step in their computational paradigm shift. However, some scientists voiced doubts, citing inconclusiveness in Microsoft's published data and a lack of peer review for many of the findings.
Alam, who serves as Microsoft's corporate vice president of quantum, acknowledged these criticisms, stating he is not concerned by them. Microsoft is among several major technology companies, alongside numerous startups, engaged in a competitive race to construct quantum computers with practical applications. These endeavors aim to produce machines capable of resolving problems currently beyond the scope of traditional computing, in sectors ranging from pharmaceutical development to national defense, by utilizing quantum mechanics for information processing.
Different methods are being explored for creating quantum bits, or qubits, including the use of neutral atoms, charged atoms, and light. Microsoft's chosen method, while theoretically promising, centers on Majorana particles, which were first posited nearly nine decades ago and have remained elusive. The company's longest-running research project in this area has also been marked by controversy.
The announcement of a breakthrough last year was met with considerable scientific skepticism, primarily because researchers could not definitively exclude other physical phenomena as the source of the signals Microsoft interpreted. In 2021, Microsoft retracted a quantum computing paper from *Nature* that had claimed to provide evidence of Majorana particles, following critiques from independent physicists regarding issues in the data analysis.
In June, Microsoft reported the creation of a qubit that demonstrated a 1,000-fold improvement in reliability over its predecessor, a development attributed to Microsoft's scientific discovery AI agent. Nevertheless, the underlying Majorana work continues to be questioned by scientists, partly due to Microsoft's refusal to release the raw data supporting its results.
Alam attributed this lack of data transparency to the commercial sensitivity of his team's work, which he stated prevents the public disclosure of granular data requested by the scientific community. He also criticized the academic publication process, noting its slow pace; for instance, a paper published in *Nature* in June was based on research conducted two years prior. Alam contended that the world has evolved rapidly, rendering the traditional model of peer reviews and publications less effective, partly due to a perceived shortage of experts available to accelerate the process.
This explanation has not satisfied the broader scientific community. Trevor Lanting, chief development officer at D-Wave Quantum, a Nasdaq-listed quantum computer manufacturer, argued that the field is expanding with many external experts capable of evaluating claims. Lanting, whose company has also faced accusations of overstating claims, emphasized that scientific evaluation is crucial for establishing a technology's foundation. He suggested that a company unwilling to submit its findings for scrutiny might indicate that its results are not robust enough to withstand such examination.
Despite these perspectives, Alam maintains that he does not need to validate his work to external parties. Instead, he plans to convince academics through the demonstration of a functional quantum machine. Microsoft has projected that it will achieve a useful quantum computer by 2029. Alam indicated that feedback from the scientific community serves as a catalyst for acceleration, underscoring the company's clear objective to develop the machine and allow its performance to speak for itself.
