Microsoft Redesigns Windows Architecture to Support Autonomous AI Agents
EVP Pavan Davuluri details underlying platform updates to security, identity, and hardware as the operating system prepares for agentic workloads.

Microsoft is rearchitecting its flagship operating system to natively support artificial intelligence agents alongside traditional human users, according to details shared by Pavan Davuluri, Executive Vice President of Windows + Devices. Speaking in a recent interview first reported by GeekWire, Davuluri outlined how the company is modifying core system components to accommodate agentic workloads while maintaining the fundamental experience for its broader customer base of more than one billion users.
Davuluri, a nearly 26-year veteran of Microsoft who was promoted to lead the combined Windows and Surface team in March 2026, has adjusted his messaging following pushback over earlier positioning. After describing Windows as an "agentic OS" in late 2025—a phrase that generated swift criticism from users—the executive clarified that the platform will continue to prioritize human operators while integrating autonomous digital workers into its underlying framework.
Rather than prioritizing front-end interface adjustments, Microsoft's engineering team is focusing on low-level platform building blocks, or primitives. These core infrastructure updates span security, identity management, governance, system observability, and performance optimization. The ongoing changes are expected to reshape foundational elements of Windows, including its file system, security architecture, and PowerShell administration environment.
To manage autonomous agents effectively, Microsoft is enhancing Windows identity systems by enabling devices to assign agents either local identification or cloud-based identities powered by Microsoft Entra. Additionally, the company is testing early previews of Microsoft Execution Containers, a security technology engineered to isolate and run untrusted agent code within virtual machines or sandboxed environments before granting broader system access.
Reporting directly to CEO Satya Nadella, Davuluri is guiding the Windows and Surface groups around four core operational directives: prioritizing customer needs, managing Windows as an end-to-end stack, designing for complete workflows, and maintaining public transparency. Following his appointment to EVP, Davuluri publicly committed to improving system reliability, initiating updates to the Windows Insider testing program and addressing long-standing user requests, such as customizable taskbar placement.
Davuluri noted that Microsoft is moving away from uniform feature rollouts across its massive install base, opting instead to distinguish platform-wide upgrades from features targeted at specific user demographics. The strategy aims to address the varied operational requirements of consumer, corporate, and developer groups without imposing unnecessary workflow changes on those who do not require them.
Despite shifts in the personal computer market, Davuluri emphasized that Microsoft remains committed to building first-party Surface hardware. First introduced in 2012 to establish reference designs for OEM partners, the Surface line now serves primarily as a testing ground for full-stack software and hardware integration. Microsoft uses its proprietary hardware to incubate technologies such as stylus support, facial recognition, and neural processing units (NPUs) before deploying them across the broader Windows ecosystem.
As Microsoft shifts from its earlier "Copilot+ PC" marketing push toward on-device "unmetered intelligence," the company is preparing a new wave of AI-focused hardware. This fall, Microsoft and third-party hardware partners plan to launch personal computers built on Nvidia's RTX Spark architecture. Among these will be the Surface Laptop Ultra, a high-end device specifically tailored for developers, creators, and AI engineers who are expected to build the next generation of software agents for the platform.
