Longtime Apple executive Phil Schiller is stepping down from his position leading the company's App Store operations, driven in part by misgivings over future corporate strategy for the software platform, according to details first reported by Bloomberg and highlighted by TechCrunch.

Schiller will remain at the Cupertino-based tech giant in his capacity as an Apple Fellow, focusing on unannounced internal projects. While his decision was partially motivated by a desire to allocate more time to philanthropic efforts and family matters, internal shifts regarding the digital marketplace's financial goals played a significant role in his departure.

Reporting from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman indicates that Apple Chief Executive Officer John Ternus and Head of Services Eddy Cue are looking to expand the App Store's profit margins. The executive strategy focuses on generating higher levels of recurring revenue from the digital store and its surrounding developer ecosystem.

The financial structure of the App Store, particularly Apple's commission fees on digital transactions and subscriptions, has long drawn intense scrutiny. The company's platform policies have resulted in antitrust investigations from global regulatory authorities and legal challenges from prominent software creators.

According to the report, Schiller's decision did not stem from an open conflict with executive management over the strategic direction. However, the veteran leader believed that attempting to extract additional profits from the software platform would escalate disputes with software creators and regulatory agencies worldwide.

To avoid overseeing the implementation of those contentious monetization goals, Schiller chose to relinquish his administrative oversight of the platform. His move leaves Ternus and Cue to guide the App Store's commercial policies going forward.

As an Apple Fellow, Schiller retains a prominent position within the company following decades of managing its primary product marketing and app ecosystem decisions. Apple has not disclosed the specific operational areas Schiller will focus on in his ongoing role.
