Qualcomm is preparing for the next cycle of premium mobile devices by splitting its flagship silicon into two tiers: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, according to a report from Engadget (https://www.engadget.com/2265628/qualcomm-is-making-not-one-but-two-versions-of-its-flagship-snapdragon-8-elite-gen-6-chip/). Both system-on-chips are built on a 2nm process node.

The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 features an eight-core CPU configuration built on Qualcomm's Oryon architecture, led by two prime cores clocked at up to 5GHz. The chip incorporates 16MB of what Qualcomm calls Flex Cache, designed to dynamically allocate cache capacity to improve single-threaded performance.

Graphics processing is handled by an updated Adreno GPU that Qualcomm says is 35 percent faster than the prior generation while boosting rendering speeds in gaming. For machine learning workloads, the integrated neural processing unit operates 14 percent faster and delivers 20 percent better performance-per-watt.

Imaging capabilities on the base processor center on a new Spectra image signal processor that natively supports 8K video capture at up to 30 frames per second. Photography hardware support extends to single camera sensors up to 320 megapixels or triple-lens configurations up to 64 megapixels with zero shutter lag. The platform also includes Qualcomm's Elite Color Engine for real-time 3D look-up tables and Intelligent Pixel Control for context-aware camera adjustments.

Connectivity across the platform is handled by an integrated X105 5G modem covering sub-6GHz and millimeter-wave spectrum, paired with integrated support for ultra-wideband, Bluetooth 6, and Wi-Fi 8.

The higher-tier Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 shares the same underlying 2nm architecture but introduces 50 percent more shared memory, 18MB of high-performance memory, and native support for the APV and VVC video codecs. Video recording expands to 8K at 60 frames per second and slow-motion recording at 4K up to 240 frames per second.

On-device artificial intelligence on the Extreme variant is rated to execute models with more than 30 billion parameters. Its Adreno GPU also adds dedicated Matrix Cores to deliver AI-driven super-resolution and frame generation during gaming.

While implementation of specific platform features depends on individual hardware manufacturers, device adoption is underway. Motorola has committed to deploying the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 in its upcoming Signature 27 smartphone.
