Reddit Beats Expectations as Search Traffic Becomes Less Predictable
Revenue and profit surged, but investors focused on volatile referrals and the possibility that AI search will reduce logged-out visits.

Reddit reported second-quarter revenue of $805 million, an increase of 61% from a year earlier, while net income rose 183% to $253 million. The company also issued stronger-than-expected guidance for the next quarter. Despite those results, its shares fell more than 10% in after-hours trading.
Investors focused on CEO Steve Huffman's warning that referrals from search engines had become choppy and more volatile late in the quarter. Reddit has historically benefited when users add the platform's name to Google searches to find human answers. AI summaries can satisfy part of that demand without sending the user to the original discussion.
The tension is complicated by Reddit's licensing relationships. The company has allowed Google and other AI developers to use its content under commercial agreements, creating revenue from data that may also help those services reduce referrals. Reddit has not committed to renewing every agreement and is evaluating how to capture the value its communities create.
Daily active unique users continued to grow globally, but the U.S. figure slipped slightly to 53.2 million from 53.5 million in the previous quarter. Huffman argued that Reddit's community conversations remain distinctive and that the company can improve how it reveals relevant content to users.
Reddit is also improving product features intended to create direct habits, including video comments and new ways to consume posts. Those efforts may reduce dependence on search if they encourage users to open the app first. The company must make those formats complement communities rather than overwhelm the discussion structure that differentiates Reddit from other social networks.
Search referrals can change quickly when answer engines summarize forum material without sending a click. Reddit's defense is the depth of its communities and the freshness of discussions that models cannot reproduce indefinitely without new participation. The company can strengthen that advantage by improving native search, rewarding expert contributors and negotiating licenses that recognize the value of user-generated data. It should also be transparent about how AI partners use posts. Short-term licensing revenue will not compensate for a decline in the people who create the conversations that make the archive useful.
The quarter shows a business that is financially strong but strategically exposed. Advertising growth can continue even as discovery changes, yet Reddit must convert more visitors into direct, logged-in users. Licensing content to AI companies is useful income. Building an audience that does not depend on those companies for traffic is the more durable objective.
