Montreal-based game developer Compulsion Games has officially separated from Microsoft's Xbox unit, reclaiming its status as an independent entity alongside ownership of its original intellectual property following a broader corporate restructuring within the tech giant's gaming division.

Originally established as an independent game production company in 2009, Compulsion was acquired by Xbox in 2018. During its tenure as part of the Xbox Game Studios network, the organization released "South of Midnight" in 2025, an action-adventure title centered on a magical representation of the American Deep South.

The separation comes as part of the fallout from Microsoft's major corporate restructuring announced in July, when the enterprise revealed plans to eliminate 3,200 positions across its Xbox operation. Alongside the head-count reductions, Microsoft signaled intent to close or divest five specific development studios within its gaming portfolio.

In addition to Compulsion, the list of affected organizations targeted for shutdown or spin-out included Double Fine Productions, known for "Psychonauts"; Ninja Theory, developer of "Hellblade"; Undead Labs, creator of "State of Decay"; and Arkane Studios, the developer behind "Deathloop" and "Dishonored."

The management buyout was detailed in an interview given to GamesBeat's Dean Takahashi by Compulsion Chief Executive Officer Guillaume Provost on Aug. 20, as first reported by GeekWire. Provost revealed that the studio's executive leadership officially finalized the acquisition of the enterprise, its personnel, and the "South of Midnight" intellectual property on Aug. 11.

Following the transaction, "South of Midnight" remains accessible to consumers across digital storefronts, including Steam and the PlayStation Network. However, the software title is now self-published directly by Compulsion rather than Microsoft's publishing arm.

Addressing internal operations, Provost noted to GamesBeat that Compulsion did not execute any workforce reductions as part of its transition away from Microsoft. He stated that the vast majority of the developer's staff chose to remain together under the newly independent banner.

The ownership shift arrives while Microsoft's Xbox unit maintains an active showcase presence at the Gamescom trade conference taking place in Cologne, Germany.
