Shares of Workday experienced a sharp rally, climbing over 25% following reports that private equity firm Silver Lake is engaged in discussions to acquire the human resources software maker, as first reported by CNBC Technology.

The rapid increase in share price led to a temporary halt in trading during late afternoon sessions. Before the pause took effect, the enterprise cloud vendor saw its total market capitalization exceed $53 billion.

Neither Workday nor Silver Lake immediately replied to requests for comment regarding the reported transaction.

The potential buyout emerges during a challenging climate for enterprise software providers. Software vendors have experienced significant public market pressure in recent months, fueled by expanding investor concerns that artificial intelligence capabilities could disrupt conventional software business models.

Against the backdrop of broader industry headwinds, Workday executed a executive leadership transition earlier this year, naming co-founder Aneel Bhusri as its new chief executive officer.

Addressing the report on CNBC's "Power Lunch," financial analyst Brent Thill remarked that a potential transaction aligns with current industry conditions given the steep decline in valuation across the software sector.

Thill noted that Workday chief executive Aneel Bhusri and Silver Lake's Egon Durban maintain established professional relationships. He explained that these existing ties, coupled with the recent stock price declines across the software industry, make a potential private equity takeover understandable.
