Apollo Warns of Rising Risk in Debt-Financed AI Infrastructure Boom
Widening credit default swap spreads highlight growing market concern over negative cash flows and capital spending among cloud giants.

Corporate bonds issued by major cloud infrastructure companies financing artificial intelligence expansion are facing heightened credit risk, according to a research note from private equity firm Apollo Global Management first reported by CNBC Business. The firm highlighted that risk insurance contracts tied to hyperscaler debt have grown increasingly expensive, pointing to mounting concern over the financial sustainability of heavy capital spending across the technology sector.
Apollo Chief Economist Torsten Slok detailed that higher credit default swap (CDS) prices stem directly from shifting views on company balance sheets rather than routine hedging activity by bond dealers. Slok wrote that the market is repricing hyperscaler credit fundamentals, specifically citing a debt-financed artificial intelligence capital expenditure cycle marked by increasing financial leverage, negative cash flows, and uncertain long-term returns on rapidly depreciating technology assets. Slok noted that the pricing gap between hyperscaler and bank credit default swaps has expanded to approximately 60 basis points after hovering near zero as recently as October 2025.
The credit warning coincides with recent statements from leaders at prominent frontier large language model developers, who advocated over the weekend for slowing the pace of advanced AI deployments due to safety considerations. Such operational deceleration could create financial headwinds for hyperscalers hosting those models. Market observers indicate that frontier developers may be pursuing federal regulation to establish legal protections against autonomous system liability while simultaneously erecting barriers against emerging startup competitors.
Dan Alpert, founding managing partner at Westwood Capital, suggested that major AI operators are seeking legal shields comparable to historical internet legislation. Alpert remarked that developers are effectively pursuing treatment similar to Section 230 of the Communications Act of 1996, which exempted web platforms from publisher liability for third-party uploads, seeking regulatory frameworks that provide absolution rather than strict oversight. Addressing broader credit dynamics, Alpert added that major banking institutions maintain robust balance sheets, strong equity buffers, and broader portfolio diversification than during the 2008 mortgage crisis, helping isolate bank credit risk from tech borrowing trends.
Conversely, tech sector investors contend that widening debt spreads may be premature given signs of operational efficiency across major cloud platforms. Paul Meeks, head of technology research at Freedom Capital Markets, emphasized that significant infrastructure capacity additions will not be fully deployed until 2027 and 2028, making current risk projections early. Meeks pointed out that profit margins among hyperscalers have begun demonstrating positive momentum, arguing that sustained margin growth should alleviate debt market anxieties over time.
Financial metrics provided by FactSet highlight varying leverage and cash flow profiles among the primary hyperscalers. Alphabet currently holds a forward debt-to-equity ratio of 13% alongside a projected negative free cash flow of $25.7 billion. Amazon records a 23% debt-to-equity ratio alongside a negative free cash flow of $30 billion, while Meta Platforms shows a 34% debt-to-equity ratio with negative free cash flow of $25.7 billion. Microsoft stands out among its peers with a lower debt-to-equity ratio of 7.34% and positive free cash flow reaching $33.4 billion.
Economists remain focused on how fixed-income markets evaluate tech debt commitments. Dean Baker, founder of the Center for Economic and Policy Research, observed that credit default swap traders represent sophisticated market participants who are pricing notable risk into debt issued by highly profitable tech corporations. Baker noted that these pricing trends reflect growing skepticism among specialized investors about whether AI enterprises can ultimately fulfill their financial commitments.
